Ok, I have the same steering wheel as thesolman351's upper right wheel in his photo.
My leather cover is separating at the seam but is otherwise in good shape.
My question is, what's the big fascination with these? What's so special?? _________________ 1965 Type 1 sunroof Baja / about 70k miles on self-rebuilt '74 1600 and counting / SP heads and aftermarket valve keepers / non-doghouse shroud with external cooler and filter / 1.5 qt extended sump / Weber 32/36 DFAV progressive carb / 009 dist with Pertronix / 1.25 ratio rockers and ball adjusters / 1.5" stainless steel J-pipes and carbon steel baja exhaust |

I'm thinking about having my wheel rewrapped with leather in TJ. Has anyone had theirs redone or done so themselves? _________________ 1965 Type 1 sunroof Baja / about 70k miles on self-rebuilt '74 1600 and counting / SP heads and aftermarket valve keepers / non-doghouse shroud with external cooler and filter / 1.5 qt extended sump / Weber 32/36 DFAV progressive carb / 009 dist with Pertronix / 1.25 ratio rockers and ball adjusters / 1.5" stainless steel J-pipes and carbon steel baja exhaust |

They just feel good. And they made a kit for VWs. The ones with the holes in the arms weren't so good, because they fatigued and could snap, but that's aluminium for you.
I'm also going to have one of mine reupholstered, but it's a way off yet. Over time the black notleather tends to crack on the top facing the sun. |

Hoobie are you still making forum lingo steering caps? I had one in tact in my '63 bug but my daughter pressed on it and disintegrated it 😳. I now need one. Thanks |

*shakes fist at sky* yes, damn forum lingo steering caps.
I'm making some more this weekend, but my chemicals are getting dodgy, so will have to see if they're okay when they come out of the molds.
Frytag asked first, but shortly there will be many on the bay that is evil.
Party on |

The first one has come out of the mold and is an abomination. I had to call in three priests and a rabbi to get rid of it. I swear I can still hear it's horrifying mewling noises.

I have found an old eastern-looking fellow who can supply me with more special chemicals to make buttons. he has made me promise to marry one of his daughters when the moon is full on a midweek summer night, but that will never happen, so I agreed.
This week more stuff for button making will arrive. |

Hi Greg,
Normally you must answer three diabolical riddles to get on it, but what the hey
Had one more success, and one more fail this weekend- the cold weather is being a PITA right now with post-cure demold times. Lucky I have four litres
of expensive polyurethanes and isocyanate to waste... |

Hi bdnFlorida,
The first riddle you must answer concerns the mating habits of the
yeah screw it you're on the list.
One of my perfect ones lost two of the backing plate spacer nubs while demoulding, so I'm looking for a way to glue them back on. So far a hideously expensive medical grade adhesive is all I have found. This means It will remain as a perfectly formed non-button in my collection of curios and mutants for the foreseeable future.
Will post more as it happens.

My wheel is not exactly what you guys are talking about but I put a Bus horn button and it snaps right in. Sorry about the photo, It was meant to show the speedometer for a different topic.

Was the different topic you posted the speedo pic for something to do with grilles and vents in 1980s Audi sedans?
Anyway just so none of you have to wear suspenders for too long, I'm just updating y'all on the progress of the latest castastrophes. It's too damned cold. I'm not happy with the quality. I will continue and keep a stiff upper lip, but if one more perfectly formed button snaps off a lug coming out of the mold I'm actually going to cry. In a manly and stoic way, of course. |
