Somehow the waiting list keeps getting longer, but I will persevere in the knowledge that I'm helping breathe new life into old steering wheels Very Happy

However much you're prepared to pay. Problem is they're usually pretty fragile, so you kind of have to not press on it. I bought one for 60 bucks and it was a pile of rubble by the time it turned up in the mail- I suspect if it was kept in a cool dark place since it was made it might still be good, but you never know.
The original one I used to make the molds from is obviously still in one piece but there's no way I'm going to put it in my steering wheel.

My wheel with new stainless steel screws....I've got about 90 extras!

Otherwise, this is how the car came to me...

Panel is out because I need to install my cheapo HF tachometer there...you can also see my 150 MPH speedometer in the background!

Looking good Dr Ron.
Those SS countersunk allen head machine screws are the only way to fly. For some reason (possibly dissimilar metal issue) the originals were always rusty. I have a very cool GF who borrowed/stole/sneakily had my forum lingo wheel re-covered by a guy who specialises in that sort of thing, and he used italian leather and totally nailed the job. She refuses to tell me what it cost, but it sure beats the old cracked vinyl. Downside is that I'm going to feel like washing my hands every time before I jump in to drive (once I finally finish the rebuild).

probably should start a thread on the build, it's been 4 1/2 years so far and I have a 5h17l04d of photos. too many to start a thread Very Happy

pretty sure the answer involved a squirrel and a frog, but back then corn was cheaper.

The good news is I brought forth two perfectly formed buttons from their moulds last night, just need to neatly trim them up and get the damned things on evilbay.
The bad news is that I also covered our digital kitchen scales in isocyanate and prepolymer goop, so I'm currently recovering from a savage beating. Embarassed

Okay guys

There are a couple of new black buttons up for sale on EBay. It would probably be smart to do a Samba US batch instead of charging out 300 dollars in postage, but to do that I'd have to send them all to one of you who was trusty and felt like posting them off to the rest of the group when they got there.

As there's no real list, just post here if you miss out and I'll make another one. Good news is I have enough urethane to make many many more buttons, the bad news is that the molds are about at the end of their life and are starting to tear.

For those who want to click and look here's one of them:

Or for the adventurous you can just type in Formuling Steering Wheel Horn Button in the search box on eBay Very Happy

Hey Hoobie,

Mate can I throw in an order for a button as well! I'm in need of a black one. My mechanic absolutely obliterated mine this week after removing the wheel.

How far off you looking at before having another batch?

Cheers mate

Hey Mcatmos, your mechanic is only partially to blame- the old buttons are usually pretty shot, and only held together by kind words. How far off? Once I've made the molds fresh buttons would only be a week after that, (if they come out right) so best case maybe 2 weeks? I've been trying for months to get them right so can't promise anything unfortunately Sad

Sorry guys, but if they're no good, they're no good.

Hey guys- looks like my original mold set was well made through luck rather than skill Rolling Eyes
The good news is I haven't screwed up the original horn button in the process of trying to make more, and now that holidays are coming up I'll be able to waste even more chemicals in pursuit of button cap formuling steering wheel plasticcy urethane nirvana. I'm sure there's a place in car resto heaven reserved for the foolhardy repro makers like myself Laughing

meanwhile, play nice Twisted Evil
