just bought a 79 beetle vert that needs an engine . Rather than spend 3-4 grand buying something ready to drop in,I have a 1500 single port that came with another bug,and is just taking up space on my garage floor. Would it be reasonable to do a rebuild and drop that in the 79 untill I can scape up the cash for something with a lttle more poop?will the engine tins fit? will cooling be a problem? thanks.

It will fit but the cylinder tins on a FI engine are wider so you'll have to fabricate some filler panels to close off the wider engine bay.

You'll also have to wire up a regulator for the generator on the 1500 and remove the ring on the pressure plate so it matches the later throwout bearing.

You'll also need to plug one of the fuel lines [no return needed with the 1500], remove the fuel pump under the tank and I'm not 100% sure but you might not be able to hook up the heater boxes the FI motor have a different set-up.

If you are planning on rebuilding the 1500, why don't you just rebuild the FI motor?
