Ha, ha, Mike Gotta' love a Skycrane, but I only have a Multi-Engine Fixed Wing Rating, and I don't think a strafing snatch would work so well on the old bus as it does here:

In reality though, the only aviation going on in those mountains are C.A.M.P and County Sheriff Helicopters hauling tons of pot from the fields.
Appreciate the props you guys, I'll have my hands full, massive listing going on here. It's just me, and whatever I bring.
I'm bringing the engine. |

I'm told it's an early forty's military auxiliary heater... goes with the tires and wheels leaning up against the bus. Anyone care to venture what kind of military vehicle would be fitted with both those items? I'll post those pictures later, they're very interesting.

Well, I still can't handle baby's diapers, swimming anywhere there could be white sharks, or condescension from my older brother, but I'll take that as a compliment. I'll try not to let you down.
My condolences to the recent loss of our good friend up there, he will be sorely missed far and wide. He was an asset to the Northern California bus scene and a damn good cook. I'm hopeful his bus and VW legacy will live on in his offspring. Godspeed.
Up early today packing. Having set fire to and exploded my Honda EU1000 generator on the last gnarly field extraction (put it out with fire extinguisher), I'm going to have to rely on propane light and no line voltage tools. I'm pretty sure it'll be ok. My very first bus, a 59 Single Cab -driven out after a 14 day reserection from Island Mountain 20 miles above Garberville- was also done entirely by propane, tent, and camp fire. This is the best way. That was back in the harvest of 1997, and soon, presumably by Sunday evening, this 59 is going to park right along side that truck in Willits.
Moving up mission departure to this evening after work to better resource mostly brake parts from the hangar in Santa Rosa. This one is not going to be as hard as the last two. This one I'm banking will have a charming and functional split case in it. Have strong drum puller but have seen too many drums break pullers, and can only hope I don't get bogged down with one of those. Hoping to have cell service to send text reports with, we'll see. I think live updates on thread bring the thread "real time" to everyone. PM digits if you want to take my text updates and post them here.
Ok, back to packing. |

Will this be your most epic extraction to date?

The first one -with the Single Cab above- will never be topped, it was off the hook. I had no experience at all with VWs, but knew that buses were to be my destiny. I was committed, sight-unseen, that I would -regardless of any possible challenge- drive that 59 Single Cab out of the mountain. Way too long a story; cobbed my first smoker together from junk on the property, pulled and installed my first trans, experienced my first and last actual wheel cylinder failure with complete hydraulic loss (properly adjusted ebrake saving my life), put my first piston up through the top of a case, sourced my first complete "known", free, replacement engine, broke my first two Napa 1/2" breaker bars breaking my first gland nut loose, slept my first nights in a front seat, avoided my first (and hopefully last) knife fight in the Alderpoint Store, and succeeded 100% with the mission, arriving at my mother-in-law's after a 75 mile drive, 18 days, loudly, with no muffler at all.

Between you and Christopher you should always have a complete set of rebuilt brakes on hand for a quick extraction.

Ok, 11:30pm now and I'm gonna' take off at about 3:00am for the hangar, where I keep all my mechanical stock. Outside, the bus is half-packed with 4 spare tire/wheels, my engine powered compressor, three tool boxes, and about five full boxes of parts, tools, assorted gear, and power equipment. The Mountain Woman has invited me to use her generator if need be, which is a major break through. Several people are lined up to take my text updates and post them as they come in, so we're approaching real time again.
Getting very tired now. Tomorrow's another day. |

Glad you guys made it home ok. See if you can bring it down to the Portland show and get it turned over to Lance Armstrong. I think I gave you his number if you still have it. If not, work with Greg and Clara and they'll help you track him down at the show. Not going to need the tow bar on this one . Have fun up there.
Ok, it's now 3:30, and I'm rolling north with 400lbs of equipment packed in the 67 Double Door Panel. I'll post from Santa Rosa, then it's on. |
