And away. We. Go...
Friday: Set Up
Friday: Applied Sealer
Friday: Painted
Saturday: Taped, Masked, ect...
Saturday: Two Toned
Saturday: Paint Complete
Tally: 2 days, 2 people, 1.25 Gallons of Anthracite, 1 quart of Pearl on the body, fenders all other small miscellaneous removables; countless quantities of tape/plastic/paper and approx 18-20 beers.
Next up: Cut, Buff and bolt back on to the chassis... It's almost been two years to the day that I bought the car, feels like progress. _________________ - e

Thanks! Can't wait to get the body bolted back on; I have shelves full of parts ready to go back on the car... This winter is going to be productive. _________________ - e

Way to go - that's a lot of hard work to pack into 2 days. Looks great! _________________ 1950 Pearl Grey Hoffman Standard Split Window

I'm exhausted.
We originally planned to do it in three days, but the weather forecast for Sunday looked to be too hot too paint (90+)... for the paint and for us cooped up in that garage.

Nothing fancy, it's some 30 year of 4 blade metal 2 speed fan my father in law installed in the exterior wall of his garage. It exhausts the over spray and fumes (the only reason it has filters on it is so we don't turn the neighbors house what ever color it is we are shooting). Across the garage we frame in the doorway from the house with a sheet of filter fabric to pull in fresh filtered air. It's a crude set up, but it sure gets the job done. _________________ - e

For the first time in nearly two years, the body is back on the chassis (permanently); Now, we'll see if I remember how this thing goes back together.

Body bolted to the pan, and just installed the doors yesterday... Replaced floor pans, heater channels and the lower hinge pillar (both sides); everything pretty much lined up perfectly. Only a few body to pan bolt holes needs a little "encouragement" to line up. I've cloth wrapped and taped the doors shut for now until I can install the handles and that little check rod that prevents the door from hyperextending... Next up, fenders.

Thanks guys, glad you like it so far.
Progress update: Installed the gauges, ash tray, hood hinges, hood gasket, fenders (w/beading), tail light housings (w/gasket), deck lid (w/gasket), radio delete plate, steering column, steering wheel, turn signal mech... I think that's it.
Progress Comparison:
Before -
Tear Down -
Dry Fit (post pan and heater channel replacement) -
Now -
I began wet sanding the original ragtop rails; in the picture one is still nasty while the other has the first rub of 400 on it. Currently, they are both sanded to 600 and look light years beyond what they started at, tomorrow I'll work up into the 1000's.
And last but not least, I made a little "buffer" to prevent the wife or myself from hitting the beetle with the Jetta door when they are both in the garage. Works really well.

Ragtop rails are wet sanded, buffed and shine like they were (almost) new. For being over 50 years old, they look pretty good... and that means I finally got to install the ragtop mech; it's the first time since I tore it apart.
I'd say the ragtop graft turned out quite nicely, every thing lines up and moves freely and smoothly. I'm very pleased.

Sigh, one step forward... two steps back.
Had my engine lid installed and perfectly aligned, it was an effing work of art. And then, I installed the new spring. Apparentally there is so much tension in the spring, it un-aligned the engine lid. So I spent the better part of an hour loosening, adjusting, tightening trying to get it to fit right... until I snapped one of the original bolts.
I was able to extract the broken bolt, however, it happened 2 minutes after the hardware store closed so I had to call it a night. Hopfully tonight I can get back on it and wrestle that damned spring into submission and have an engine lit again. _________________ - e

Looks awesome!!! I just got my 68 back together after a five year driveway restoration. Had my first voyage in it yesterday. I painted mine Anthracite with grey with off white piping interior. Best color in the whole VW catalog. I was going to do the two-tone, but it was previously and I wanted something new... |
