Jerry if I lived close I'd go with down there with you, my gramps is WWII vet and is a good deal like Mel, doesn't take hand outs, not that he needs them really, but I bet if you got something going with the local VW crowd, and Mel wasn't opposed to it, you could atleast finish painting his house for him, maybe even do some updates to it, to make his living conditions a little better

not sure if he'd be up for all that though

I can't control your personal email.
If you mean the Private Message (PM) system on the site, we don't see those either.

hmmm
Don’t know what happened
No big deal,
-------------
Yesterday when I took my bug to Mel, he commented that it was dark navy blue. Something to the effect that it was a little warm of a color for AZ. His 63 was originally white and now rust.
Of course my wheels are just a turnin -- but again he cannot drive. He has an old garage that needs a header, and some new doors,,---and the bug could go inside of there. - Well now your wheels are turnin

I stopped by today and talked with him for a while. I started out by stating that I was NOT there to make offers on his '63, just to shoot the breeze, one vet to another. He came outside and looked at mine from the shade... (it was a little warm at 11:00 in the morning) and we talked about the '63. Which he said he had bought and installed a bigger bore engine rebuild kit for it a while back from J.C Whitney.. (In my mind I thought, "BINGO - no run - J.C. Whitney") It is in really good condition, body wise but it does have a thick layer of dust inside and out. He talked about Pushing Rommel out of North Africa and how he was trained as a pilot at Thunderbird Field, (now known as Thunderbird School of International Management) I explained to him about google maps and showed him on my iphone, Thunderbird Field from it. He thought it was amusing and kind of laughed a little. He stated that he was born and raised in that very house so I gathered from that, he was a Glendale High School grad. He told me that he didnt graduate high school because of the war. We talked about some of the local establishments and how they had always been a part of the scene there but had been lost in time like the sugar beet factory and La Perla. He seemed to really enjoy the company but when I asked him if he needed anything done around the place, he understandably declined. He really is a cool guy. This guy has so much to say, it seems ignorant on our parts not to listen. Dont be afraid to just stop one day and introduce yourself. I gave him my number and told him to let me know if he needed anything - a ride, an ear, help with the yard, anything.

Yeah. He didn't say much about it but he sure liked to talk about stuff he had done to the '63! (Isn't that how all of us are when it comes to our VW's?) I just figured that if I drove that, he would see that I was there out of common interest.

Very honorable of you and appreciative, Mike!

Did Mel mention why he is not driving the Beetle anymore?

My father was on the German side in North Africa- worked in the "motor pool" repairing the German war machinery, including Kuebelwagens!

I sure hope Mel would like to come on over. I will be coming down off the mountian, hopefully no snow on the way down. Maybe get to see him at Glendale.

Glendale was a bust - at least I thought it would be - rain -
He is only home fri-- I was going to stop by and show him my 54 -- but other things got in the way

Maybe I can get to him this fri--

Damn - I feel so selfish -- time just gets by so fast -- I have so much and many have so little !

I have not been there to see him for awhile-
I will try to stop by tonight on the way to hot rods - he has not seen my 54 ford.
-------------
We had a lot of interest, but as our minds work--- we prioritize our lives,, and leave the weak and the old to fend for themselves.
------------
I left my phone number, but Mel has never called. In his mind his personal sacrifices and ability to never take anything from anyone puts him in a position of integrity. Much more integrity than money can buy -

Feel free to contact me with e-mail.
I will not be posting anymore on the Samba – Unless It comes for sale for a fair price. Persons like you, cavscout, would be the new faces of the direction of the website.

Jerry dont know if this is any intrst for Mel, but if the guy enjoys cars in general, with Barrett-Jackson coming up in a few weeks I get as many passes for the event as I want because of the large amount of business i do with them buying and selling cars there, I would be more than happy to give you a pair of tickets if you wanted to offer it to Mel, pm me if interested
