hey there, meet half moon, she is the newest edition to the family, she was given to me yesterday by the nicest old lady. you want to talk about a project, this is it. half moon has been owned by this family since new, and she has been sitting in this spot for 30 years, she sat 10 years prior in the driveway at their other house. but of course, there is a bunch of rust, and lots if not everything would need redone. the original motor and trans is in the bus, they had put a newer motor in it so it would go 45 instead of 35 mph. both motors turn by hand, so atleast thats good. the main frames underneath look ok, but the jack supports are gone. interior has front seat, which needs recovering, nothing in the rear to keep, but lots to get rid of. most windows are good, but a couple need replacing.
i havent gotten her home yet, i need to remove the old ladys fence to get half moon out, then i will trailer her home. now, from what you know, is this a worthy vehicle worth years of my life and thousands of my dollars, or do i part her out and take what i can get. i am not a pro shop by any means, but i can do the work with time..lots of time...so, i would love to hear any and all opinions on the new addition..thanks..brian

Haul it out and make a proper assessment, then decide what to do. IMHO it looks too nice to part. Besides, you can't do much better for the price. |

Looks more like a mid 57 or earlier to me based on the paint job and the decklid, score! What VIN # are you referencing? |

She said it was either a 57 or a 59, I couldnt read the #, but it was on a plate right of the engine, which I thought started in 58. I have only spent maybe half hour at most with her. _________________ 62/70 Dune Runner Mini Mercedes "Eugene"

Please tell me what it is about the decklid and paint job that tells you its an older bus. _________________ 62/70 Dune Runner Mini Mercedes "Eugene"

55-57 brakelight decklid and bubble taillights makes it look earlier than a 58 for sure. But the vin# will tell it all _________________ ** HELL YEAH I'LL SELL IT TO YOU**

Likely that is original paint there (palm green/sand green). Is there an interior" Middle and or rear seat? Door panels? That is a very early bus and worth saving, if not by you then by someone else. Nice find! _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

No rear seats at all, just some wood they made. Not original panels I do not believe. There is still the panel behind the front seat, with a light in it. So, is it safe to say a 57 is kind of rare? Do you know how many were made? I get more excited about this thing every second. _________________ 62/70 Dune Runner Mini Mercedes "Eugene"

Is this vehicle a candidate of a full restore job, replacing with german sheet metal and all, or just get my sheet metal from bus depot and call, it good. _________________ 62/70 Dune Runner Mini Mercedes "Eugene"

If you are excited NOW, think of what it will be like when it is in your driveway all cleaned up! Maybe not exactly rare, but certainly desirable. _________________ "My biggest worry is that when I die, my wife will sell all my parts for what I told her I paid for them"-Jon

Good find. I'm local to you if you need any help or advice. there is a good group of bus folks in the Spokane area for questions and moral support, so I would definitely encourage you to keep the bus and put it back together. What have you got to lose?
When you go back to get the bus, make sure to ask for any extra parts, documentation, and photos that they may have. Ask about bumpers, interior panels, seats, etc. They can be difficult to find otherwise.
Congrats on the bus. Be sure to get more detailed pics for all of us to peruse. _________________ nothing |

The earlier a bus is, the more rare it is. Some people find any AC VW rare.
The brake light decklid buses (like yours) are more desirable and valuable than the later buses. See the red light in the engine lid above the plate, that is the brake light.
Yup, that's gucci right there:
VIN list/ production data:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/chassisdating.php
They made 315 209 buses by the end of 1957 (including previous years production)
this is where your VIN/chassis # is:

Uh, every bus is worth gerson metal. Get it, save it, drive it. Get gerson if you can afford it. If you cant....just apply shitloads more elbow grease and cuss words as you install cheaper metal as sometimes it doesnt fit right. Get what you can afford. Im guessing you arent interested in making it a show bus. I still havnt taken the plunge into body work but from what all the threads here say....get gerson. _________________ Waiting for santa to drop off funky green. I can wish can't I???? |

Camper window not stock, full bench front seat. Luckily my job sent me in her backyard, and there she was. _________________ 62/70 Dune Runner Mini Mercedes "Eugene"
