Hi everyone. I just bought a 73 super beetle for $100 and hope to fix it up and re-sell to make some profit, for money for my bus Very Happy. i havent looked at it very well yet, but the pans look solid, only rust through is battery tray, and there is also a really bad rust spot behond the rear window on the drivers side. i will be doing a clean up on the interior today to see where i need to start. will get pictures up soon.

peace

You're going to want to do some searches here...that spot alone will cause you great grief.

I have yet to see anyone make any serious money on a restoration, so good luck. Rust repair and new parts $$$ add up quick, so I think you are gonna want to keep as much of the original parts as you can if you are to have any chance of making money with it.

I don't think you will be able to sell it to make back what you need to put into it.

That Super needs a lot of TLC.

Where I come from, we call that a parts car. Frankly I don't see a whole lot of good parts on it either. If you want a chance at making any money on that car at all, you'd be best to part out what you can and scrap the rest.

Just my $.02 worth.

The wood grain dash inserts are worth a bit of money.

I bet if you dig into that bondo at the roof and the rear, you'll find no metal.
That is a parts car
If it had an engine and was running, might be worth getting back on the road
If the interior was more decent/that dash is trash
If the body was less rusted, I'm willing to bet the pans and heater channels have rot too.
if it was only one out of the three problems you might be okay, but this isn't going to be a flip and make money car.
The only reason to fix it is if it had sentimental value to you
Sorry to be so blunt!!!
$100 is a good price for a parts cars, so feel good about that.
If you were lucky enough to find a good running engine and fix up the interior you'd be into the car at least 1000 to 1500, not including anything else

Looks like you have at least a '74 Super that may have at one time been a Sun Bug (woodgrain dash, brown door cards). You aren't going to make any $$$ flipping that car with what it needs. I would try to find a local buyer who is looking for a parts car that is willing to pay more than $100 for it.

you could sell it for scrap metal for more than $100, but I am sure there are some good usable parts on it. Might be worth disassembling to bare shell and scrapping the shell. Even the sunroof section might be worth something to someone Smile

Even as a super lover I'd say scrap it except as 19super73 mentioned it looks to have started life as a sun bug which makes it slightly special but would take a dedicated welder to fix.

You can see the original harvest gold paint, woodgrain dash etc.

Wow, part it out, you'll make a profit that way. If you try and restore it you'll lose big time.

I'd say it is probably a parts car. If you want to be sure I would sand/scrapre away the paint and bondo and see what you have left. Then you can make a much more informed opinion. It may not be as bad as it looks (might have been just bondoed over dents/surface rust....I have had that before), but no way to be sure until you dig into it. It doesn't take long to find that out.

It is not a 73, it should be a 74 (unles fenders were swapped) due to the shock bumpers. Also it is definitely a SunBug as it has the harvest gold paint (visible in sunroof), the sport rims, the brown doorcards, the brown carpet (visible in rear seat pic) and the woodgrain dash inserts. If the shifter knob were there you would have easily made your money back there, they are hard to find. (I have a 74 super sunbug as well).

I say dig into the body, post some more pictures as you do and we can tell you for sure if part/restore is the best option, although making money is less likely if you go restore. Dash alone is likely $300 and up for a good one.

X2. The Sun Bug wheels are worth $100 alone, the steering wheel (see if you can find the centre piece) can go for $75-$200 depending on condition etc. Like Joel, I am a dedicated lover of the Super Beetle but this one is beyond a flipper, part it or find someone who wants to part it.

X...infinity.

After seeing your photos, that car is not economical to fix up and flip, no way no how. You might double your money by posting it as a parts car, but you'll do far better parting it out yourself.

On *just* the c-pillar rust, you're looking at a worst case scenario of this:
