Aloha Kalapaki Papa! Mahalos for the compliments. The fastback has been my daily driver the entire year hehe. I sure miss driving her around ): But, I'll probably be back home during the winter just in time for the holidays. And I'll be sure to hit you up a message when I get back. It would be great to meet up with more ACVW drivers back home on Kaua'i Very Happy

yes fill the engine with oil
?does it leak at all?

i dont know about the fuel stabilizer
but i do know fuel going bad can leave varnish
esp in the metal tube just outside the tank

If you keep it with gas in it
maybe plug the fuel line so there is none in the rail in the car

Deff jack stand it so you keep tires good
Altho the 67 i had sat for 27 years and the tires still held air

I say ship it to Northern Nevada and I'll take good care of it.. its dry out here... very very low humidity, and best of all I'll keep fresh gas and Oil in it... to keep it in top notch condition of course. of course there will be no mileage (becuase your speedo will be disconnected and mine in its place) and she'll stay nice and shiny.... she'll have a garage to stay in.... just a thought Laughing

Thanks sharkskin for the heads up. The only leaks are from the oil drain plug after driving. I haven't gotten the sta-bil yet because the fasty gets started once a week; rolled in and out of the garage and driveway ever since I left (December 2011). But i'll be getting it moved to my friends shop soon. I'm planning on doing a mild resto since there's a few very minor rust spots (surface, no rot) and hopefully getting some lowback seats in and getting the clock to work lol.

hehe awesome! And thanks for the suggestion. The fasty is stored in my garage and I'm sorta between two mountains, miles away (like 3 miles haha) from the coastline. The salt air isn't too bad but for the past year I was driving daily to work along side the beach, since the only highhway was on the coast >.< But I've always wiped her down when I'd get home.

if its near the coast (like here in Oz) get someone you trust to go around every 3 months & give it a fresh water wash... pay for my ticket over & ill do it... very experienced fresh water washer Laughing
no serious... its a good idea. we do it here or get a mobile wash crew to come around & give it a quick clean... a few hundred could cost you alot more Rolling Eyes

Definitely sta-bil or seafoam, this modern fuel goes to shiet quick, like in 3 weeks quick. Some fuel additive, do a oil change on it, and disconnect the ground on the battery. That is all you need to do.

edit- I forgot that I posted already, at least most of my suggestions were consistent.

heres my 2 cents on storing

get a tarp thats a bit bigger then the car, sat that on the ground under the car (spread out obviously) this will keep moisture from rising through the ground, put jackstands under the suspension so its sitting at normal resting weight on the shocks/springs let 10 - 15 psi out of the tires, this will keep help keep them from dry rotting, not indefinately but will help, get a high end car cover one that wicks moisture, wash and wax the care prior to storing, fill the tank add a bottle of seafoam run it for a few minutes then top the tank off and shut the fuel off to the engine, disconnect the battery and remove it, bar of soap in a plastic bowl in the car, along with a large bowl of rice (will keep the moisture out and is much, much cheaper then dessicate beads like you get when you buy electronics) put the cover on the car and you should be good, while a fan/dehumidifier isn't a bad idea, if no one is checking on it every day or two you risk them burning up in the year+ you are gone

also add some lucas or preferred oil additive to the engine/trans to help keep them free while its not running, you must wash and atleast do 2 coats of wax on the entire car (including the windows) with a few coats of rubber protectant on all window seals before you cover it, this helps with the water wicking off of everything

wash it with distilled water Laughing and store it in a airtight room with 2 tons of silica gel packs. or even better have it foil bag sealed and silica filled like machinery thats going in a shipping container ocean bound. Surprised

Little update. Finally got my approval for my first R&R in July. Sort of a surprise for my family...well I hope they don't go on theSamba forums from now till July haha. But my older brother has been starting the car once a week and letting it run for a good 10-15 minutes, ever since I left in December. He also takes it out for a spin on those days, which I wasn't too stoked about Crying or Very sad . But he's been doing me a huge favor. I hope in July I get to do more work on the car. Mostly just cleaning it up more, check the brakes, fluids, etc. I only have about 28 days back home, so I won't have much time to do things. Mostly catching up with the loved ones.

I also contacted Anibal from CPR about an engine build, but I still don't know what route I should take; fresh built engine from a reputable builder or try to tackle on building my own engine (1776). But the engine and transaxle build/rebuild/etc will come towards the end of the year when my contract out here in Afghanistan is over.

Well my friends, thanks again for all the suggestions on storing my fasty while on my deployment. And I'll keep you posted on my fasty. I'm sure I'll have a thread on the things I'll be doing to my her.

Mahalo!

hit me up when you get back...

Only problem with trying a rebuild here on Kauai is that if you need machine services, there ain't none! Same goes for a tranny overhauls. without the right tools/jigs... it's pretty tough to do it "correctly".

I do have some contacts so lets have a cold one and talk story when you get back. Be safe!
Aloha, Jeff

Hey Jeff! sent you a PM. but about machine services, i think there might be one guy that has all the tools/jigs for machining. i sorta recall someone (he owns a manx) saying something about getting a case line-bored. but then again, i can't remember. and i ordered a few things to tinker with on my fastback when i get back in July Very Happy
