I'm not finding a whole lot of exhausts that are going to look good on a volksrod. This one would look great
http://www.shopatron.com/products/productdetail/pa...leshopping

am I right in my thinking that this exhaust would totally kill my low end?

any exhausts that would work on say A dune buggy, would work on A Volksrod.
PS: some baja exhausts systems would look good also.

that's what I probably will do. I just need to decide on a style that's not going to hurt my performance

right now I'm trying to figure the best way to get back pressure, equalization from side to side without a merged header

I have never heard of anyone in here that knows those formulas.
In fact - years ago - guys would put on headers and their car would turn higher 1/4 mile numbers--Whoaaa
I think you’re in for a great challenge- maybe you should ask that exact question in a new thread

You are going to have to have a dyno

Completely unnecessary. How many of the commonly available aftermarket VW exhausts were developed using the results of repeated dyno runs?

The OP is wanting to build a VolksRod, not a drag car, and he's worried about a loss of backpressure from aftermerket pipes killing his low-end. This is a common topic of conversation in the motorcycle world, and in the end, you only have a couple options.

1) Baffles

2) Mufflers

If he can't find mufflers that will offer the combination of looks and performance he needs, baffles may be the only (inexpensive) option.

custom if I have to, over the counter if I can find it. I have an equal length merged header right now with a baffled stinger. Performance and sound is fine, its just going to look like crap in my opinion.

Man I could build you something that would individualize that bug right to the magazines

Make some sketches - I am away from my shop for another month - E- mail me

The looks of the thing is the entire project!

get the old how to hot rod vw engines book, by bill fisher.
see the exhaust . section pg 43

and how you can't tune it right, because there is no 56" for a rear pipe.
sure there is power to be had over stock, stock is for quiet.

see page 11 curve 3 ,4:1, easy bolt on power (with tune)

steel pipe in 70 is steel pipe in 2011.
in the text he shows the best books written for the equations, if you like to break out the slide rule (grin).

really there can't bet a great set of headers. (not in the true sense like front engine or mid engine cars)
and not look like crap?
and still have some ground clearance ?
and not burn your girl friends legs , when you make her check oil levels.

but do tell.

I would love to have 4 separate pipes, but even if I got the back pressure right, I know the scavenging effect wouldn't be there.

maybe 4 separate, equal length pipes, a connector between both pipes on each side, and a cross pipe going from one side to the other? but where? under the engine would be too low and would have heat beneath my engine rising right into my sump, I could go in front of the shroud, but then I've got a heat source right near my air intake. so....

maybe keep the header I have and put a T at the top and a pipe pointing back down on either side (instead of the u bend and single pipe on a lot of bajas)...

or I could win the lottery and put a turbo on top of my collector lol

I guess I should have also been more specific about the car and called it more "volksrod-ish"
it won't have an engine cover. Just a small "cowl"
