Can you provide more info? Such as where they working then stopped or has this car been sitting a while? Have you checked fluid level, for leaks, bled brakes, adjusted them, etc?

First check brake fluid level, check in the back of your drums or wheels if there is brake fluid leaking, could be the brake cylinder in any wheel, search for leaks in all the system before changing any part in order to avoid changing parts that are ok.
Once you have corrected the problem,
check all the brake system to avoid any future issue.

Could be M/C. Is your reservoir full of brake fluid? If not, check for leaks in the system. Steel lines, rubber hoses and wheel cylinders all need to be looked at. Check these out before you replace the MC. You want your braking system working at 100%. This is a 49 year old car and it needs lots of TLC especially on the braking system. Your life and your passengers depend on it.

Will you see brake fluid on the tires and ground or do you have to pull the drums?

If your master is empty or real low, the fluid went somehwhere and you should see evidence of it at the wheels. Since stopping is kind of important, I'd suggest going over your braking system - how old are the flexible lines at the wheels? When was the last time time you did anything to the brakes? It could be a leaking line (metal or rubber), bad wheel cylinder, bad master cylinder - pretty much anything would cause loss of pedal pressure.

If any of the parts are in question or old, replace the basics- hardware, cylinders, hoses, shoes. Don't bother Mickey Mousing with the old stuff if it is ancient. Use German hose and new metal lines. Replace drums with new ones if needs be- stick with German or Italian. avoid any others.

Try putting a want ad in the classifieds.

Also there are a lot of these things in the samba archives if you are just looking for one you could copy.

But the question is why.....If it hasnt been checked for years - then that may be OK - if its that low after a year - then like I said - it's going somewhere........
