Hey guys.
I figure it was time to start a thread for my 1964 Standard Beetle.
I bought it from a uni student who stopped driving it as she couldn't afford to run it. I got it for a great price.
It has already had bodywork and a respray (unfortunately) some years ago, and has very minimal rust. Mainly in the decklid, and around the decklid seal.
It still has the original 1200 engine which runs great, but I'm going to upgrade it eventually.
Anyway, here's some pics when I first got it home.
It also came with the original sales receipt.

I ordered heaps of parts straight away!
Albert swan neck mirrors, and stainless headlight eyebrows
A set of Empi GT 5 spoke wheels
Pair of 155/60 15 tyres for the front
And stainless header, and phatboy muffler (for a later date!)
Got the tyres mounted on the rims, and bolted up to the car.
Bought a roof rack, and bolted up the swan neck mirrors
I also swapped the taillight lenses for some smoked clear ones. Not sure if I like them though. Might get some US spec ones eventually.

It started running a little rough after being driven for a few weeks so I had it serviced, and a new 009 dizzy installed
Now for some tunes!
Bought a JVC USB head unit, and a cheapo amp (which I'm not happy with, and will eventually change).
Sub box
And I cut a parcel shelf out of MDF, and screwed on some 6x9 speaker spacers.
New headunit installed
Sony Xplod 12" Sub
Retrimmed the box in some Spiderweb pattern material
Cut some speaker rings for the front, and trimmed them. I'll trim the parcel shelf eventually, but this material is only temporary until the whole interior is trimmed properly.

Picked up a set of amber foglights, and mounted them up. I still have to wire them up.
And a safety star
Decided to extend the shifter. I have done this in nearly every car I've owned. I just think it looks cool. The shift knob is an actual 22mm Vulcan round, used in fighter jets. Just needs a lick of paint now!

It is! No rust in the pans, heater channels or any of the panels, only the decklid, and I have a W decklid waiting to go on.
And I certainly am going to slam it (hence the plates)
Airkewld Lowering Kit with 4" narrowed Ultimate beam, 2.5" drop spindles, narrowed torsions, narrowed tie rods, new king pins and bushes, front and rear shocks, ready to bolt up! I also have ordered a pair of Jer Fab drop spring plates.
Now all I need is time to install it. It's hard with it being daily driven. Maybe over the christmas holidays. |

Been a while since I updated! It's finally closer to the ground.
Stock Beam vs 4"Narrowed Airkewld Beam
Stock Spindles vs 2.5" Drop Spindles
Notched Springplates
And this is how it sits
3 splines in the rear, and the adjusters about halfway in the front.

Thanks guys.
I'm not sure what the original colour was. It was like a cream colour from what I can see on a patch that I rubbed through. They made sure to cover everything with the new paint!
My 3" dropped Jer Fab Spring Plates arrived yesterday.
I'll hopefully install them this weekend, along with new axle boots, and brake master cylinder.

The brakes went out on the old girl just before christmas. I replaced both front brake cylinders, but it turned out it was the master cylinder.
As most shops were shut for the holidays, I hopped online and noticed that some shops were still shipping. I ordered a new master cylinder, and an alternator backing plate.
They arrived yesterday
Anyways, since we've had torrential rain for 2 days straight, I got started masking my new engine tinware for paint. This is to go on the 1600TP.
Masking checkers is a PITA, but I'm sure it will be worth it.
Also dug out some of my spare air ride parts, left over from my old Golf Buggy. I'll get started mounting this stuff soon.

Like what your doing with the dog house. Did a similar thing to my speaker tray; fiddly but it pays off. |

I ended up going back to stock springplates, as I couldn't get a happy medium out of the Jer Fab's. It was either too high, or too low combined with 1 spline +or-.
I got a second pair and had a mate TIG them together to correct the toe.
These will do for now. Next i'm going to get started hooking up air shocks in the front, then eventually I'll bag the rear.
Here's a few pics I took yesterday

Been a while since I updated!
Well, still going trying to get the 1600 finished. The car is booked in on the 19th to get the motor and a new clutch installed
Cleaning the engine up
Started putting bits and pieces back on
More bits and pieces arrived Monday.
And I shot some clear on my tinware.
My fuel tank sprung another leak. After bodgy quick fixes 6 times now, I'd had enough and needed to get the new tank sorted.
I had a Herculiner bed liner kit left over from a previous project, so I decided to coat it with that. It's a rubberised coating like Rhino Liner and its indestructible!
Old Tank!
New Tank, and the bedliner kit
Done
It's good being able to put a full tank of fuel in, and not worry whether its leaking out or not. haha _________________ Custom doesn't come in a Box! |
