Ok, today was my last day to get a lot done for this week. I work odd hours so during the week I am pretty tired from lack of sleep.
I got most of that writing off the side and then TR3'd it. It needs another coat of it, but the first pass looks pretty good. Won't get to a second pass till after the insides are done. He got pushed against a wall on that side so it is not accesible for now.
Then I started gutting the insides,
Buddy seat before,
after a Dawn bath, (dragon berry fresh now) LOL
No more buddy seat,
The water filler just disenigrated when I tried to take the cap off. Need to find a new filler tube.
Sinks gone,
Why does the passenger seat lay flat like that?
Pretty well gutted.
I still need to pull the side panel and the last part of the roof panel. Then I can hose out the entire insides. Once that is dry I can start the process of replacing things. I will be buying new panels for the roof and the side. I plan on buying that nice looking wood and staining it.
As far as the cushions, I am planning on just cleaning them really good and using them. The buddy seat is the worst one with a small section missing one one corner. I will still use it, but when it gets to bad I will have to look for replacement vinyl for it.
I will update in a day or 2!!
OH, I also ordered my personalized plate today! It's going to be TYEDYE2. My 64 Spitty has TYEDYED. The 64 has tie dyed curtains. I plan on doing a little different style of curtain for Wes, (yah I named him Wes, short for Westy, lol), but they will be tie dyed too. _________________ Kim

What a great find, Kim. We are all enjoying this with you. It is truly amazing how Wes is cleaning up, and I know how much work it is -- but it is so rewarding! This is going to be a great camper for you and Bob.
But - before you get carried away and actually try to run it, please do pull out the engine and give it a good cleaning, too. That means removing all the tin and checking out the cylinder fins. With that much rat stuff all over the place, there may be lots of stuffing and shells and whatnot on top of the cylinders, and that would be very bad for their cooling.
I recently did the same thing you are doing to a '73, and it cleaned up beautifully. Lots of work, but in the end it was so fun. I sure wish my wife shared your enthusiasm. _________________ John

Yes, I am having a lot of fun doing this!! I did all the pulling of the insides pretty much by myself. Just had to get Bob to help lift the bigger things out!!
As far as the motor, I am most definitely going to be pulling and stripping it down before we even try to turn the key! There was just to much rat poo and shells all over the engine compartment. I'm going to get the insides all done, then worry about the motor. I am in no hurry to get it on the road, just want it done by next week! LOL No, really I want to be able to go camping by next spring! That is the goal! _________________ Kim

That water fill tubes break like that all the time its hard to find one that don't happen to. My wife also doesn't understand she could care less but I do have a lady customer that just go's nuts for my collection in the yard and I have teenage girls come by (mostly three at a time) just to look and want to buy one of the old bus's. I will say it again man that westy is in good shape!!! _________________ where its cold and snowy |

Too bad those gorillas at the yard used a forklift on it. I swear...
By the way, where are you located? "United States" is a bit vague. I'm just curious as to the general part of the country. With all that moss of the roof, I know it ain't the southwest, at least. _________________ John

Hey, I got some stuff done today!!! I'm kind of excited because with what I got done today, will allow me to now start putting the insides back together!!
He got a good bath today. Everything got the hose. That and Clorox Clean Up!
The door came out great!!
The dash needs a little more attention, but it is alot better then it was!
Everything is nice and white now.
I even hosed off the inside of the pop up and the roof. I eventually will have to figure out how to take the cot off so I can wash it in the machine.
This next part is the fun part for me. Putting it back together! Here is the "fake curtains" for behind the closet.
Before,
After!!
Of course it is tie dyed! After all the license plate is going to be TYEDYE2. LOL That and I really like bus's and tie dye, to me they go hand in hand!
In the bus!
The next step will probably have to wait till this weekend. I need to go buy some paneling and stain. Then the fun part of tracing, cutting, and trying to install the new panels begin. My most dreaded piece is going to be the rear roof panel. I had a hard time getting it out, so I can imagine that it is going to be a pain to put back in!
Will update soon! _________________ Kim

I got off early from work this morning so I decided to go putter on Wes. I decided to find out what the dash would look like with some Maquiers cleaner for dashes.
Here is a before,
During,
After,
I think it came out pretty darn good!! I will eventually have to replace the little directional vents and take the speedometer cluster loose to clean better, but the first cleaning came out nicely!!
Hubby told me I should open up the vent tube things to clean them out. So I did that to the passenger side! Not a hole lot in it, but needed a cleaning.
Later I plan on re installing the insulation that was in the sides of the bus. It is still in good shape so I want to reuse it! Then I think it basically comes down to waiting to get new panel board to do anything else. Well, I could clean all the cabinets and pads. So I guess I have something to do for the next day or so while I'm waiting to get the board! _________________ Kim

Today we went and bought some paneling. I got a late start on the cutting and staining but I was able to get it stained 3 times in front and once in the back. It is now drying over night and I will try to install it tomorrow.
We bought 4x8 sheets of paneling. Got it home and realized there was a slight problem. As you can see in the picture, the paneling is a bit short. Even if I turned it, it was to short. We decided to cut the curve part out so it would match the opening in the roof, and just ad a small piece to the back where it won't be to noticeable because of the shelf that goes below it.
The staining process!
The old side panel next to the new stained one. I think new one is a bit darker! LOL
I also bought a new window rubber for the window that is not accessible once the cabinet is in. My hubby's kid ( a window installer) came over last night and R&R'd the rubbers for me. So that should take care of any leaks. Tomorrow after the roof is in I will put the curtain panel in. Well, I hope to put a lot more in too! LOL I'm hoping to get the side panel on, and then the closet, and maybe the bench seat. This all depends on how hot it is when we get back from a car swap meet we are going to in the morning.
Ok, here is a dilema I am having and I don't have much time to decide what I want to do. I really like the original lino that is on the floor. Thing is, it is kind of rough. I can probably cover up the front part by the door with something, but the nicks and holes in the main walkway will not be able to be covered. I don't know if I want to just live with it, or replace it. I only have till tomorrow to decide. If I'm going to replace it, I need to do it before the cabinets go back in. What do you guy's think, replace or deal with it?

Yep you need to get the baltic birch paneling in 5x5 piece's to get the right fit and it is available. The flooring in my 71 westy is like brand new it was covered with some sort of old felt carpeting and it must have been put in really early in the bus's life because when I took up that stuff it was like Christmas. . _________________ where its cold and snowy |

Well, today I had to make my decision. To put new lino in or leave the old and just have a bunch of little holes. I finally decided on new. Before that though we installed the roof panel. One thing I learned is, by cutting the pattern out like I did, the grain was going the opposite way that the board had to bend, to bend into place on the roof. We did manage to get it bent in to place, but it did break a bit. You can't see the break though. It is on the top. I lucked out. I will look for the baltic birch when I get ready to do the front. ( Thanks for the tip bigbore.) So yah, it will have two different types of wood, but oh well, we aren't going for a beauty contest!!
Once that was up, and the lino was down, it was time to start putting the furniture back in!!!
I had to do some repair on the overhead shelf so I have to put that in tomorrow after the glue dries over nite! Then I have to do some minor wood glueing on the sink and also do the plumbing on it. Then that can go back in.
Next big thing to do is pull the motor!!! I will hopefully be getting to that maybe next weekend!! _________________ Kim

The problem with the 4x8's as compared to the 5x5's is more than just the size. The grain needs to go fore and aft to get it bent properly. 4x8's with the grain running crosswise just won't bend. At least it won't bend to get it up in the original curvature. Although we did it once with a lot of soaking and steaming around a jig. Even then 3 panels broke. When you find the right 1/8" birch 5x5's they are cheaper anyway than 4x8's from Home Depot. _________________ The best thing that anyone can do for their Bay is get the Volkswagen of America Official Service Manual published by Robert Bentley.
