I can weld just fine just want to make sure everything is where its suppose to be before I start setting it all back in perm.

Inner should sit flush at top... up to the cargo floor. Can't remember how far forward... hopefully the pic helps. With outer rocker not installed yet... I swung the doors shut & marked where the cargo door rods wanted to call home. This helped me make sure the rod recesses in the rocker would end up in the right spot (see pic).

A step drill bit can be handy for plug welding... or a Harbor Freight pneumatic punch.

Here is the page of my thread that shows that. The inner rocker is exactly the same on buses and trucks, outer rocker is a little different.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?

This video will show how to align the inner rocker to the front.

Link

One of the tabs at the end of your new inner rocker needs to be bent back out flat to go between the top hat flange and the A pillar close in piece. The end of the video shows the correct way that they should all line up.

This is a tricky little area. Post some pictures we will help.

Holy crap...you can weld through Gerson's funky green? I've been removing it all the time.

Yes remove the funky green. It makes for a funky weld. Easily cleans off with lacquer thinner and steel wool.

This is the only shot I have of the rocker on my bus, someone mashed it up pretty good before I bought it. I was looking at it yesterday and noticed that the belly pan looks welded to the back side of the rockers lower flange. Would I need to remove the pan to replace this rocker or just drill out the spot welds and re weld in the same plug welds?? I would like to try and replace this myself if I don't have to remove the pan. Thanks

If it's not rusted, and it's that much trouble, I'd consider pulling out the dents.

Luckily I dont think it is rusty . The front dent would not be too bad to pull but that rear one is really caved in. Something a "real body man" could do. But an option, thanks Ken.

Kurt,

I soooooooo appreciate that video and wanted to thank you. Started repairing the right side floor, B pillar, etc. and wouldn't have gotten the B pillar are right without your video.

Kurt (or anybody else with the knowledge)...trying to install my inner rocker. The tab on the end...the one you bent outward to make that three piece sandwich? Mine extends beyond the tab on the top hat by about 1/4". Was that what you had? I was kinda expecting them to meet edge to edge, but I can't shove the rocker rearward any more to make that happen...its flush up against the inner whee well in back.

Also, when the outer rocker is installed, does it sit on the same exact plane as the inner...everything flush with the tophats, beams, etc? All level?

And finally, the securing bars on the cargo doors...(the ones that go into the roof edge and floor to hold the doors shut), well, mine are a little too far apart. Guess that's to be expected on something this old. Can the doors be adjusted to be closer together, bringing the bars in tighter as well?

Ken, Post some pic of your cargo doors in the closed position.
show close ups of the gaps on top and bottom.

Clamp the rocker on with good pics of the areas you are concerned about.

I'll do that tomorrow. So... Is the outer rocker level with the inner?

Measurements say more than pictures...The gap between the "B" pillar and the forward cargo door is 3mm at the top and narrows to 2mm at the bottom. The gap between the two cargo doors is 4mm at the top and widens to 8mm at the bottom (the reason why my locks just about miss the slots in the rocker). The gap between the rear most cargo door and the "C" pillar is 3mm at the top and narrows to 1.2mm at the bottom.

Interestingly enough it seems I have a total of about 10mm total gap at the top and the bottom, meaning to me that the bus hasn't sagged. Seems like the bottoms of both doors need to come toward the center line, giving a straighter gap at the "B" & "C" pillars over all, and closing the gaping gap at the bottom of the doors in the center.

How does one do that? The cargo doors were replaced at one time.

On of my videos shows me using a stack of washers to bend a door to open a gap. Think along those lines. We need pictures. No the outer rocker is not coplanar with the inner rocker. It is higher depending on what brand of floor you are using. You need to check the striker plate clearance and gap for your doors with the hight of the outer rocker. Use lots of clamps or screws to mock it up and make whiteness marks.

I did grind the rocker sandwich flush before edge welding it all together. The small square flange on the inner rocker that is bent down must be coplanar with the close in piece.

When I completed the 67 bus rocker I had no problems.

The flip seat was different. The doors were not aligned and sounded like your problems.

I had to improvise and try different things till something worked.
Here is a pic of me using a ratchet strap and scissor jack.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

In that pick the cargo rocker was welded into place.

In the end the doors were perfectly aligned.
