I figure if I dont start the official thread on this thing now I never will.
Back story:
I bought this car 2 months before I left to go work in Afghanistan. I have not touched wrench to car yet.
It came from south florida. It was actually listed here on the samba for a while and then ended up on ebay.
A shoddy restoration was started which included... The wrong pans and seats being installed, horrible welds and patches, missing parts galore and me scratching my head. Being new to splits at the time I bought it not knowing the cost of those missing parts and have since paid the price.
Currently:
I have been gone about a hear and a half. I have had lots of time to figure out what to do with this ugly blue bug.
I have accumulated a mountain of parts and have deiced my path.
The car just made a long journey to Tucson AZ to my fathers house. I will be working on the car on and off during my R&R periods.
Without further talking... its picture time.
list of plans and pics of ideas to follow.
This is the day I picked up the baby blue monster.
Should have brought a split owner with me to talk him down some more
I parked it soon after those picture were taken...
The next pictures are from when I was home on R&R and got to take a closer look and see what all was missing and do research on what it will need.

Here is some stuff I bought for the car to make it more correct and way wrong at the same time.
Keep in mind one or two of the pictures are from a dealer photo and it is not the "actual" part.
4" narrow Adj AK beam
POD/speedo with perty new parts
Semis
New wheels
Berg shifter (this is a samba gallery pic but I got an identical one)
This engine was advertised here on the samba as a 2442. I got a good deal and I WILL be making this fit in the car. Of course it will need new headers and other bits to do it but my mind is made up on this.
Got this CSP shroud here on the samba
Will be installing these panels I picked up (dealer photo)

Clock blank off
On the list for a new wire harness when the next batch is done
New repop tail lights for a dual filament bulb
NOS popes nose
window regulators
Super street transmission with welded this and hardened that
F and R bumpers and brackets
Gas tank
Still need
better axles
Front drops and disc brakes for a L/P
Dual circuit master, and all lines.
All body rubber
Misc glass
Interior material and door panels
glove boxes
I know im forgetting stuff
if any of you have anything in the list of stuff i still need let me know.
I wish i could say I was on the downward slope of spending money on this car but there is still a few big ticket items up there.
Thanks all for looking. I get to go home on R&R this weekend and will get to play in the garage. _________________ 58 Binz DC #151 "Nacho"

Looks like you have a handful bud! At least its got the dimpled rear fenders! Thats a huge plus as they are hard as hell to find. You gonna take the body to get stripped? Let me know when you get back to Afghanistan, see you over there! Gotta go make some more VW $$$$ Spent way too much on the RHD Vert!!!!! HAHA
Have fun on R&R!

Love the photo of the crotch coolers going through the trunk area. I never thought to even look at that area in one of those bugs. Always cool to see something new. Thanks |

I have the glass, regulators, handles, the metal piece that the glass sits in that connects to the regulator but thats it. I need the rest and im not even sure what all im going to need as im starting with a shell of a door.
haha no way on the pedal. I think it will clean up nice.
As for suture plans for the car.
It will be low but drivable.
The paint is going to be similar to the Ducati Matte black or "dark" paint.
Im debating on trim or no trim
and is there a paint that will stick to all the knobs and buttons to make them more uniform and black too? _________________ 58 Binz DC #151 "Nacho"

I see by your sig that you have a 51cc bug, that sounds kinda slow.
Overall it looks pretty solid. I wonder what youre gonna find when you tear into that heater channel and firewall though And i hope you got Stevie Wonders autograph when he welded on the rear. looks like you coulda did a lot worse though, looks a lot more solid than many newer beetles.
Im not a purist but i couldnt be the one manning the cutoff wheel when those rear wheelhouses get the treatment for the carbs.
Love that shifter! |

Those are odd heater channels... I think they have been replaced alread. Because the split should have a circular holes for the heater... _________________ Currenlty Corralled:

Its getting close to be that time. I leave for home in aprox 6 days and 12 hours. Ive been building this car in my hear for almost 3 years time and buying/hoarding parts for just as long. Ive quit my job overseas and have not hired on anywhere new. I finally have time to love on this car.
a few things things have changed in my plans
Color: White
Interior: Red
Pan: silver POR topcoat
Wheels: may change as the RDW's may not like the HP
No popouts
on the fence about a stereo
Here is the bug in its new home in Tucson
Here is the new shops back half, plenty of room to get dirty

There is very creative welding on this bug. Im interested to find out whats under all the blue and the bondo. Ive no idea the original color of this car either. Its been bastardized so I dont feel so bad about custom buts here and there. It will have Gerson floors and channels and all the OG parts stored away. _________________ 58 Binz DC #151 "Nacho"

Looks like the passenger side door is the correct "ribbed" version, but not the driver's side....is that right, or am I still asleep?
Good luck with it, keep at it, persevere, and you'll be fine.
Oh, and I know a guy who has those RDW wheels, with a turbo 2332, launches it at 6,000 rpm on 7 inch wide slicks, and they have held up just fine.... _________________ 2003 Samba Chummie Winner- Best Story

Well, there is a 62 jeep that is haunting me and is in the way of me working on the bug. There is however a few tid bits I can work on that are stuffed in the corner.
Had to weld to the studs of the tranny for a quick removal to install the support for the Hyd slave.
Adjusted valves and installed new valve covers that I bought at bugorama.
Mocking up the shroud, distributor and exhaust. The waste gate's flange is wrong so there is that... and ive run out of bolts to mount everything else...
