This is an interesting read, When I got my Ghia I was looking for a '69 car as I was born in 1969. It also needed to be a right hand drive car, but according to our DVLA there are only 9 left in the UK on the road with 3-4 more registered but not taxed.
That left me with only 12-13 cars in the UK to chose from which was a lot narrower than the OP's scope! I ended up with a UK '69 that was first registered 15 miles down the road from me, three weeks before I was born. I don't know when it was made, but the fact it was a local car registered in the same month I was born was good enough for me
Good luck with your search, I totally understand why you're doing it _________________ 1969 UK Karmann Ghia build http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=518789&highlight= |

Thanks. I just hope when/if I find it that it is not a $20,000 full on custom car that somebody has done up thinking it is gold and leaves me shaking my head (and walking away empty handed). _________________ 2000 Golf TDi

I was born 17 May 1959 exactly 10 days and ten years difference from you, so if I had to do it I'd have to justify going a lowlight. There goes my budget!!! Importing & converting to RHD. I am about to go through that with a 1969 and a 1971 that have just landed in Sydney.
When I finish getting extorted by our customs people later this week I will have a reasonable idea what I would be up for with a 1959 lowlight.
Maybe in a few years when I reconsider my toy collection. |

I e-mailed about this car, its a 149 953 6xx vin. Definitely the latest 69 I've found. Nice car too. Oh well, my search goes on.

Earlier in this thread, you hypothesized about the average number of Karmann Ghias produced in a single day at the factory:
fifty8 wrote: |
...
Dividing 27892 (coupes) by 365 days in a year would give roughly 76 built per day, assuming they had a 7 day work week. ... |
Doing some quick math on your latest info:
fifty8 wrote: |
...
149 861 0xx (8 days older)
149 861 7xx (16 days younger)
... |
Assuming the max 800 possible VIN numbers in the range you gave (149 861 000 through 149 861 799), then there were approximately
800 cars/(8 days prior + 1 actual desired day + 16 days after), or 32 Karmann Ghias produced each day on average during that time period.
I have no idea if any of that is even close to a valid estimate - I just saw the numbers and couldn't help but do the calculations.
(Yes, I know - Nerd Alert! )
If indeed there were only 32 Karmann Ghias produced on your particular birthday, I'd have to guess that the number of those Ghias still surviving to this day would probably be countable on one hand.
I have to say, I think that most people would be pretty happy owning a car from the year they were born, but to actually find and own one that was made on the exact day you were born - how amazing would that be!
I wish you good luck on the hunt. |

That is awesome, especially since you were not even trying!
Thank you, I did not know about that site. I do check ebay maybe twice a week as well as craigslist, searchtempest, etc. Some people on ebay post their vin #'s, I usually ask those that don't and direct them to this thread to help explain my search. Maybe half of the people I ask actually reply (on all sites). I have not been searching quite as aggressively as of late as some of my funds are currently tied up but I hope to put out another wanted ad this fall. As of right now there are 31 listed in the classifieds here, I'm happy 69's are still pretty common. Helps my odds of finding THE one. There have been more than a few I have not contacted being way out of my price range, being way over priced considering the condition (butchered, burned up, custom done up to their taste, etc), location, etc. I'm patient. Having fun searching too!! _________________ 2000 Golf TDi

Slight update to my nearly impossible quest. The previous to last car I inquired about with the VW Museum turned out to be the build date of a Beetle so the car I thought was built 8 days before I was born (April 29th) was in fact built on May 19th, 1969. I've exchanged a few e-mails with the VW Museum and they double checked to be certain. I can't recall turning away anyone with a slightly lesser vin # but I have indeed been searching a little too high of a vin #. Back to the old drawing board
149 861 07X is the car that is 12 days younger. _________________ 2000 Golf TDi

Wow I actually read through this whole thing! Fascinating really and there has to be a formulary...I think my hypothesis was wrong in the e-mail about the registration date being her actual B-day...(March 12, 1969)...Anyways I feel weird posting her VIN# but wth... 149 143 087
I have never seen one with xxx yyy either but that is no surprise. I do not know how off mine is from May but there it is |

According to the archives here, 149 474 780 was December ending in 1968 so yours must have been built a few months earlier, maybe October 68?? _________________ 2000 Golf TDi

That makes two now with ten digits that have popped up in the classifieds since Patrick's post. I pm'd him after the first. Would be interesting to see it's birth certificate.
Still no luck on my search lately, mostly 68 built 69's.

Recently, this car was posted here for sale and after seeing that the vin # was close to my potential target, I contacted the VW Museum to check the build date. Since the previous car I checked (149 861 074) was 12 days younger, this car (149 860 099) I expected to be a couple days older. Got the results today and it was built May 10th, 1969. Three days younger than me. Man, I'm getting close!
As of sometime recently, you now have to get birth certificates and data sheets through their website. Previously they would just e-mail me with the build date (for a fee) as that was all I was interested in and sometimes very quickly, but now I have to wait several weeks for the data sheet. Luckily for me this car was not my target date as it looks to have sold shortly after I inquired about it. Glad I'm getting closer! _________________ 2000 Golf TDi
