I'm looking for a 40 ford front hood for a type 1. I know there is a fiberglass kit out there somewhere, but I'm done looking. Can you help a brother out, and if you know of a manufacturer let me know. thanks, Mike.

BGW Spectre makes hood conversions etc.
The one in the sale ad would be a 36
The 39-40 is a different style
never dealt with the company. They are still in business. google and you will hit their web site.
toughest part about finding one for sale is shipping issue. I watched for 2-3 yrs before finding one while on a business trip about 4 hrs from home. fortunately, I had driven my truck. I found it on Craigslist. sometimes one pops on the Volksrods web site
good luck and hope you locate one. they are pricey new

BGW Spectre still makes/sells them - I got one about 2 years ago. Took a while (figure a couple months), had some minor freight damage (packing was not real good). If you want it to look good and the grill to fit, plan on 40-80 hours to get it presentable, but not perfect by any means. Big dips in the fiberglass and the grill opening isnt even close. The grill mounting takes a lot of work - I probably spent 20 hours grinding and polishing the grill to get the pieces to fit together better. Not even close to perfect. But to get a new one, they are the only game in town. The chrome trim and bullnose they sell is a joke - I have 2 sitting on my shelf that I can't use unless I spent a couple days grinding and fitting, then having to sand and polish it out or get it plated.
And what is sad is that the BGW was much nicer than another one that I had - unknown manufacturer.
If you want a hood seal - you need to do this custom - I used hollow core universal half round foam automotive weatherstrip.
Also - there are ones for supers and standards - not a "one size fits all". The best one I ever saw was actually made from plastic with a proper lip for the hood seal and a really nice grill. but was made in the 70s.
If you are doing a rat, then its not that big of a deal. All depends what you want. Sorry for the bad news. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.

3-4 weeks ago there was one about 3 blocks from my house in some ones front yard with A for sale sine on it..
It's the other way then I normally come & go so I dont know if its still there or not? I always thought the kits looked A little dumb, But at the same time thought it would be sweet for A volks rod.. seeing the pics above id say I was right,,, those cars are sweet!!!!!!!!!
I also think A fenderless bugeye baja front would look grate on one _________________ 1302s sunroof..

The mistake I made was thinking that the BGW was going to be a lot better than the one I had. There were a few areas that were better (the hood bracket for one - but with some metal and fiberglass, you can beef one up) If you find one that is half decent, but the fit isnt great, its easier to fix it than go through the grief with BGW. Good luck. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.

You were right, he did get more support here, even though the post really did belong in the beetle forum.
If the original Inch Pincher shows up with its fiberglass hood, doors and fenders, send it here too, we'll show it some love. |

Oh I will. I'm all for do your own thing. Dont follow the norm... and lead your own way.
The members over in this forum welcome something other stock and patina. (rust)
I dont think it belonged in either forum.... It should be a want ad. Just trying to help someone as usual. It seems it got more attention and answers in this forum so this IS the right place. Now we have a source for a current supplier.
I have posted this before, Joe Vittone would be thrashed today for customizing a 67 Beetle...his way. _________________ aka Ken {o\!/o}

You are correct it is sort of an ad but we do allow people to ask who manufacturers items if they think they can be bought new and are unable to locate a source themselves. |

LOL ...... That actually brings up a good point. Did you look over there as well? I have seen hoods pop up on both sites on occasion and that's where I sold one that I had. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.

Gents,
Over the many years I've been restoring old cars.....ANY CARS, I go to Craigslist and post in the "Auto Parts" section a "WANTED" ad. I simply put "Wanted:" and then what I'm looking for.....I ALWAYS get a reply or two, no matter what I'm looking for. There's ALWAYS someone who has one hanging up in their garage or barn or somebody who knows somebody out there who has one. And MANY times I've had guys sell me the parts CHEAP because they've been waiting for the "right person" to come along and want to put it on THEIR car. Give it a try.....I've found LOTS of rare and needed parts this way!

I got a quote from BGW Spectre. Their 40 Ford Deluxe VW hood is $750. Tack on shipping and handling (box and crate) of $300 or more with their carrier (I guess), or the $500+ and $650+ UPS and Fed Ex quoted me and you've got a new look. Or you could buy a hood medallion for ?? and learn to love the aerodynamic lines you have in the classic factory look! Too many dollars for me! |
