Pushed the car outside to clean up it's droppings on the floor in the garage (a substantial pile!!).
While outside I decided that considering that the windshield rubber seal was rock hard, the plastic chrome trim was faded black and the seal had pulled back from the frame, that I'd remove the glass.
The PO's had also poor painted to the edge of the rubber leaving a mountain high ridge of paint along the entire perimeter. The Black in front of the dash is also rusty and need of refreshing as well.
Removing this glass was Easier said than done! I couldn't cut the rubber well for it crumbled and chipped as I cut it. It also broke off razor blades as you shoved them in and dragged them along. The rubber despite it's advanced age and decay had fused itself to both the body and the glass as well so that considerable care had to be exercised to slip in a very thin putty knife around the glass to break the bond between it and the rubber.
A trash can of crumbled rubber later and a time period that was MUCH longer than anticipated yielded this....... (I've come to really dislike Ravenna Green!!)
The Rust is far better than I anticipated, compared to some I've seen, non-existent!!)
I was happy to see that the factory drain holes were not enlarged and horrible rotten as well.
I've done older windshield removals but haven't seen (or fail to recall) the seal retainer "teeth" as shown in this photo. What year did they begin to be installed I wonder??
Well, it's my Birthday weekend so this project may just lie dormant for a few days!!

I have installed several of the dash toppers. How ever the last one 2 years ago is staring to buckle but the car is not garaged at all. This is the first one that did that that I know of.
Don't remember when the grippers were first installed but most were not re-installed as the replacement seals were not made properly for a good fit.
Happy birthday

djkeev. THANK you so much for posting those pictures. I saw those two holes in my back window and thought they were rust holes. I was going to weld them up.. Those are drain holes, I would have never knew! Thanks again _________________ 1995 Mitsubishi 3000GT SL

Just a photo of note. I was amazed at how well the heater pipe has held up despite obvious rust promoting conditions!! The heater channel bottom plates is a little worse for wear but still serviceable.
In this photo, you can see the convertible reinforcement plate that is exposed at the door A pillar threshold (upper left corner of photo). It is curious that inside of the door threshold is an additional reinforcement plate that runs towards the rear the exact same distance the visible reinforcement runs. Anyone know if this interior plate is found in the sedans as well or is it a convertible only thing?
(see the plate at the base of the A pillar where the threshold has rotted and also above and to the left of the 90 degree fitting to the straight pipe?)

I bought a DashMat for my '74 vert from JC Whitney, it fits nice and looks good. You need to use velcro (included) to hold it down. _________________ Mike

I think it's amazing that you're posting all this. Maybe it's an impression more than a reality but it seems like a lot of the respected, reliable, and frequent posters on this forum imply that they wouldn't be caught dead anywhere near a rusty car (and admonish all those with rusty cars to get busy welding immediately) let alone alive and driving it around and enjoying it like you said you were up until deciding to sell it. Your post reinforces for me that a huge part of bug ownership is taking pleasure in the car you have, fixing it as you can when you can, and enjoying yourself while you have it instead of driving around in a cream-puff only when the temperatures are above 70 and the relative humidity is below 20% etc.
Some lucky someone is gonna get an awesome car out of this. Great work! |

I see JC Whitney no longer sells DashMat but they now have Dash Designs. Looks and costs almost the same, I paid $31 but now it's up to $32. Search for an online coupon and you can get free shipping. _________________ Mike

So I was looking at a post on here about rust in his Convertible. What I saw in his photos was crazy scary!!!
Here is one of HIS photos!!!
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=362218
I am in the midst of a anti rust campaign on my Super Vert so against my better judgement I figured that maybe I should pull the top and peel away all of that icky carpet and crap the PO has behind the seat and see if there is any metal left or not. I know this car spent a period of time in Florida without a roof so the chances of significant rust in this area may be high.
I'm happy to report that I've only mostly surface rust. There is a minor metal perforation or two above the shock but that will be easy to fix.
Whew!!! happy to see this solid metal! A little bit of welding, a period of wire brushing, add a coat of paint, we'll be good to go!

well, been working on that nasty running board mount..... cut out the rust and botched welding and am fitting in a new panel to weld in. Still racing the fair weather window snapping shut before paint season is over!
Rough fitting...

Is the panel here one you fashioned yourself or one you bought? Oh...and out of curiosity, what's your welding set-up? |

I purchased these panels. I use either M&T or.... gasp!! wait for it......... MA Motorworks. oh the shame I know! They have been good to me so far, they've been shipping quick and they've had some panels no one else has had in stock.
I wish I could bend long straight seams but I lack the brake needed to do so. I looked into a cheap homeowner brake and that cost almost $300.00! I can purchase a lot of prebent panels that need minor tweaking for that kind of money!
Besides, after cutting off the excess from most replacement panels I end up with a pile of smaller sheet metal chunks. These are ideal for all of those little patch jobs (such as the rust by the convertible top wire J)

I have both a spot welder and a Hobart 140 using solid wire and an argon gas mix. I also have and Ox/acy torch set up but rarely use it for welding, too much heat put out. I do use that for bending metal and loosening rusty bolts though.
