WHAT A MESS!!!!!!!!!!
My PO in the previous 36 years before I was blessed to own it, obviously had an engine fire.
All new wires from the Dash connector back to the engine area. Not stock colors BUT they had the decency to use an assortment of colors and stripes, that made the task almost "easy".
They failed to properly wire it however!
I found the source of all my electrical issues an set the fuse panel back correctly.
My PO really liked 16 and 25 amp fuses!
They should all be 8 Amps except for fuse #9 & #10 which are 16 amp.
The only electrical task left is hooking up the horn properly and then remove the remote horn button.
I'm sure there's a reason why the factory horn button was abandoned! it will require a repair I'm sure........
Then I need organize the wire bundle and reinstall the fuse panel. I sourced a proper black plastic under dash cover for the wire mess as well.

Also using the 1973 wiring diagram I've removed the 1974 exclusive seat belt interlock and warning system. |
To remove the interlock system, did you have to short some wires together at the fuse panel to bypass the system so the car would start? I'm looking to do this on my 74 super, and would be curious how you did it at the fuse panel. _________________ scrapyards are for quitters

Well, I'll tell you what I did........
I opted to give up a few things, the key buzzer for one.
1). CLIP THE GREY/BLACK WIRE...... The key buzzer is the Grey/Black wire out of the ignition switch....terminal Su....... As designed, When you slip in the key it becomes live with 12volts. I clipped it off at the fuse panel where it goes into the relay. You can cap it, I opted to use it to power a radio (fuse it first). Key in the ignition...... Radio energized. Key removed..... No radio.
2). WHITE/RED out of ignition switch. This is a BIG wire and energizes the Starter Motor after it goes through the relay. I cut it off at the relay. The wire from the Relay to the Starter is RED/BLACK. I joined the White/Red directly to the Red/Black.
3). The BLACK wire from the ignition switch energizes FUSE 11. I simply removed the Black wire from fuse 11 to the Relay and cut it off.... Not needed. You do need the Fuse 11 energized for operation of your brake lights and horn.
LEAVE THE BIG BLACK WIRE CONNECTED TO FUSE 11 !!!!!
4). The following wires are used for the seat contacts.... Just cut them all off at the relay.......
BROWN/BLACK
RED/BLACK
BROWN/YELLOW
GREY/RED
5). I capped off the GREY/GREEN WIRES, they a for the seat belt warning light on the Dash.
6). The GREEN/RED wire goes to the oil pressure switch, I just left it.
7). The brown wires are part of the diagnosis plug.... I just left it.
I unplugged the Relay and tossed it aside.
It all works. My only question is the function of the Brake warning light to actually warn me of anything. I don't know what, my parking brake switch is long gone so to me that entire light is a waste of dash space. There is no low fluid switch so.........
That's what I did. It all works just fine, very much like a 1973 does.
I fear posting this for the Naysayers will chime in on how I can't do this...... Well I did...... It works!

Thanks Dave. I'll have to print that response out and take it out to the car to properly digest it with the wires in front of me. _________________ scrapyards are for quitters

So, I puzzled out the odd piece of Tin......
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=555224&highlight=
Thanks guys!
I've got the seat track guides in place.....
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=553852
I'm down to,
*Fixing the Passenger side floor heater vent flap, it was rusted away, I've made a new door, just need to fasten a cable fastener to it.......
*Finding or making an angled foot rest for the Passenger side (was it originally there? I don't know...... but I like them so I'm putting one in!........ Yeah.... I'm gonna be THAT PO!)
*Install the Passenger seat
*Install the Passenger side Running Board.... Broken tap in one of the threaded holes..... How discouraging!.......Who would be so stupid to break off a tap in a simple hole?? .......
*Adjust Drivers Door Window so it sets level when lowered
*Install Plastic behind door card and then install drivers door panel and related parts.
*Dye Drivers seat Grey to match the other Seats already Dyed......
*Adjust Brakes
*Fix leak in Spare Tire
*Installed Wiper Blades
*There is a radio hole...... Undecided what to do. I'd really rather have my iPod work than have a radio........ anyone have a cheap even a nonfunctioning "stock" radio?
*Buff out some painted spots and minor touch ups from sitting in garage with four small grandchildren running around......... "WATCH OUT FOR THE CAR!"... They hear only something like the animated comic Charlie Browns parental voices....... Wah Wah, Wah Wah....
INSTALL NEW WINDSHIELD THAT I ORDERED FROM CHUCK'S LAST WEEK (That's why I'm screwing on rebuilt/recycled door cards...... Money better spent on important things)
And then...... Drive it!....... When I'm not working on the Vanagon....
Passenger Door Done! Yeah... I know darn screws.... So close Dave and fall on your face at the finish line! future Darn PO!
What's the common advice? Do what makes YOU smile?.... Some day I'll order new door cards and do it correctly.........maybe...... Except that There is a saying..... "The Westy gets what the Westy Wants!" I'm finding that to be true already! Westy wants may Trump Beetle needs..........
Anyway....... For your critical pleasure........
