I think my fuel pressure regulator is kaput! Last night we replaced the fuel pump, and removed the pre-filter, and went with gowesty fuel filter kit. We were in process of test driving the van, and final adjustments, and after 20 miles or so, it started bucking. We pulled over, and while cycling the fuel pump we noticed that the FPR is bypassing too much fuel, and we were starving the engine...... Hm... Is that even possible? When manually operating the fuel pump (key on, AFM wiper move), the FPR is making a lot of swooshing sounds.
A clamp to FPR inlet hose later, and we were back on the road with no issues............
Has anyone had a similar problem?
Is this really FPR issue or something else is showing its ugly head? Could it be that the fuel pump is too strong? _________________ Learn to ride. Ride to learn. |

You need to do a fuel pressure test. Harbor freight has a simple fuel pressure gauge. The for doesn't last forever but don't start throwing parts at it until you know the problem. _________________ 1982 Westy, 1974 412 Variant... Yes, Aircooled's are great! 3 issues, bad FPR, bad fuel pump (stopped working), and electrical issues on the wiper blade...
it took us 5 hours to go through everything. in process of elimination we backed out electronic ignition....
but the van is running smooth now.
FPR replaced.
Old Fuel Pump. New one stopped working all together.
Wipers cleaned.
Everything is working like a charm!
**** and i Jinxed myself... The bucking is back. Out of a blue it started bucking. Mess with AFM. Nothing. Clean the AFM. Nothing. Take the gas cap off, wait a bit.. wroom.. she comes back to life like nothing happened. frustrating! _________________ Learn to ride. Ride to learn. |

Just as I was praising the motor on the other aircooled forum, the buck-a-bucka-bucka syndrome is back.... For last 2 weeks I have been driving around without any issue, and after a fuel fill-up (could be a coincidence). the van started bucking again. park it, let it sit, try again, nope... let it sit more... it starts and runs fine...

You need to talk to Colin on that. If it were me, I would check for vacuum leaks. I have a break bleeder that I hook up and pressurize the vacuum system to about 5 lbs. Then with a bottle of soapy water I can find difficult vacuum leaks. _________________ 1982 Westy, 1974 412 Variant... Yes, Aircooled's are great! But if it was vacuum, it would consistently be bad, not random. _________________ Learn to ride. Ride to learn. |

Not necessarily, it could be something that occurs in the right conditions. Also it just occurred to me, did you replace the ground wire from the transmission to the body? These will corrode in the connection ends and cause grounding issues. You might also want to replace the negative cable on the battery too. Otherwise it could be a short somewhere in the wiring. _________________ 1982 Westy, 1974 412 Variant... Yes, Aircooled's are great! I cleaned the ground wire very well on the body to transmission. and all 3 grounds inside the engine bay. i'll take the battery out too, and make sure that one is making a solid connection. _________________ Learn to ride. Ride to learn. |

Post in the classifieds for vanagon and for bay since they had the 2liter too. What happened to yours?
Did you ever resolve the bucking syndrome? _________________ 1982 Westy, 1974 412 Variant... Yes, Aircooled's are great! Oh and I do have modern computer controlled vehicles too, but I just don't care about them. |
