it has been a challenging week or so the new motor is in and running the h30 seems to be jetted horribly wrong. the trqnsmission isnt finding fourth at the moment and the old man wiring for the instrument array let its smoke loose. the wiring is almost fully repaired (wish i could say the same for the dash)

got it out on the road for a bit today and sorted out a few more things. had to run a new horn wire the old one was still there but looked as if it was bashed pretty good off roading. the PO had put a big push button on the dash as a fix. rewired the master cylinder switch it had failed at some point and been run all wacky through the floor.
most exciting is it looks as if i have 3/4" clearance to be able to park it in the garage. readjusted the garage door to poen all the way now just have to move some stuff around. getting my insurance on it tommorow and hope to start driving it. maybe this week i can bring my welder home to patch up a few things. _________________ 1958 custom camper

had a fun time working on and getting to know my bus yesterday. i got all my insurance straight this week and started driving it. despite broken tie rod boots sloppy grease everywhere the front end doesnt feel bad. the transmission despite its audible voicings seems fine. the noise from the rear seems to largely be coming from the header to apron contact i have in full effect.
so i went to lowes to pick up a few things and at the last moment decided i would get some paint to do touch ups. to make sure the right color got picked i bent over and started picking flakes off the nose till i got one about the size of a postage stamp. no sooner was it in hand that i noticed the person in the spot next to me watching. the little old lady rolled down her window and with a slight laugh she said "here for more paint huh". She also advised i get a good roller because " it'll go faster and not leave all those stroke marks"
the lady in lowes took my chip and optically color matched it. i was pleasantly suprised at the price and how well it matches.after moving a few things around in the garage i should be able to get it in this week to do the minor touch ups i was planning. the outside temps here might keep this stuff from drying for weeks even with the japan drier.
One maintenance point in desperate need was spring replacement in the door handles and striker adjustment to the passenger door.
the new springs from wolfsburg were robust and fit quite well. i was glad to see the handles were in better shape than i had figured. the actuator rod from the inner handle on the passenger side was not in in the proper spot and was making a horrid screeching noise on the notorious cracked tab on the inner door pressing. speaking of pressings noticed this while working on the driver door
looking at some damage in the pillars the door was definately swapped at some point as the door in place during this damage was most likely wasted. _________________ 1958 custom camper

been awhile since i posted any progress but i have been busy. got the motor all tuned up and running like a top. she still leaks some oil but is manageable
the manual choke is so nice.
the interior is coming together i have been getting everything fitted and plan to pull it apart to grind prep clean and insulate the rear once it is all fitted. nice having a interior my daughter says it makes it seem like a real car.
the ceiling hasnt been fitted yet as i am unsure of what to do with the roof. currently there is a 10" hehr vent cut in. the ventillation is nice and i want to keep it. the thoughts now are bouncing between finding a pop roof ( from a westy or dorm),a subhatch or a standard 16" camper vent. if anyone is sitting on one of these they would part with keep me in mind. the full rack has been sold as it doesnt fit any of these plans plus it will give me a chance to build something later to better fit my needs. the hwe rack i had just barely (3/4") cleared the door frame of the garage. the new rack also will need a spot for the spare

no welding needed to install a sub hatch. but you could small corner tabs after cutting roof . the opening is cut 1/2" all around and then the 1/2" is flanged upwards all around, then use hammer and dolly to make nice. the aluminum trim covers the flange. _________________ 1965 panel bus-Kermit

This same approach applies to pop-up tops as well. Anyone who has replaced the canvas on one of those will tell you how rough it is under all the trim/canvas/etc.... _________________ Founding member of

That oil breather hose will stop breathing as soon as enough oil pluddles up at the bottom sag!
Route it over the engine in such a way that any oil "collecting" in the hose will drip back into the engine and/or into the filter housing once the engine if turned off. _________________ Some people are so busy being clever they don't have time enough to be wise. |

Well I have driving and enjoying the bus mostly on the weekends with the family. From these endeavors I have started gathering all the needed items to upgrade the running gear. Big brakes and big nuts are coming soon!
Greyhound is currently bringing the so42 top I want to install and ups is bringing the hwe kits ezcamper in Florida is selling.
so when it is done there will be a front and rear rack with room to stand inside.
So I have searched for install threads and close ups of details for doing the top but think my searching is off as I am not finding much. If anyone has links or photos please help me out
Pictures as soon as the parts arrive _________________ 1958 custom camper

been working on my new top was showing a little wear and tears in the fiberglass. i expect to be breaking out the saw soon. having done a few searches and really not finding a good step by step for putting in the top looks like there will be some improv. for that matter i cant even find good pictures of what an original holes bow etc even look like. if anyone could help it would be appreciated.
