Keep up the good work Brad.
I'm still planning a stop by the shop when I find some time. Are you ever working on it late evenings or Saturdays? _________________ http://www.nuts.commercial-air.com/

Christmas is upon us so work has slowed a little. I made some panels and welded them in to block off the speaker hole and big hole for the radio. I found a decent ashtray to put in the dash to keep parking change in and test fit the ABS glove box I got from CIP1. It doesn't fit tight to the back of the dash so I had to notch it at the bottom on both sides to fit over the brace for the hinges and bottom lip of the dash stamping and I also cut a notch so it would fit around the flange where the bolt screws into . It now fits nice and tight to the dash. I'll still have to get a longer bolt to use the band as the box is a little bigger than factory I forgot to take some pictures of that but will post them soon, might help someone out. I won't be able to use a glove box door becasue of the cage so I'll leave it open and fill the holes for the hinges and snubbers. I simply ground the rivets off to get the hinges out.
I want to keep the dash looking mostly stock so I'm using the factory grill, radio block off plate (not a horrible repop) ashtray and I'll put some dummy switches in. I just spray bombed the grill as it's really rusty, but I have a better one to use.
I also cleaned up some surface rust and filled holes in the front and shot some primer over everything to keep moisture away till paint.
Other than that , not much new. Started designing a console for switches and gauges to fit between the shifter and park brake handle.

Well, Merry Christmas all. We've shut the shop down for the week so I can take a much needed break and also work on my little project. Yesterday afternoon I fabbed up the mount for the front end and got my regular front end mounted.
Today I build the brace and got all the holes drilled for the dzus fasteners on the side, which was very time consuming, what a PITA. I forgot to take a picture of it today But I made a simple stop cable for the aero front end so it doesn't flop open all the way. Also filled in the sides of the engine compartment with the pieces I made earlier this month.
I also made up the front to back fuel line and got it strung in the car with -6 AN bulkhead fittings front and rear. And. I got the steel tranny mounts in the car and welded in my mid mount. Had to modify it a bit because of the braces welded in on the forks.
Here's the mount on the front beam. Tabs bolt under the beam bolts and some 3/4 inch tubing with tabs slotted into the ends. this is the green (standard) front end
As you can see the brace on the frontend is pretty short, 23" wide, I'll use this front end for autocrossing with my big tires. One of the POs cut out the wheel arches as they was to cheap to buy the propper offset wheel
Here's the inside of the aero front end. The brace is much wider at 32" as it will push a lot of wind at high speeds. this is as wide as I could go as it starts to curve quite a bit from here.
You can see how wide the tabs are out on the front end
A mounted pivotting front end YEAH
Here's the 2 filler pieces I made for the front corners of the engine compartment.
Hoping to put in another full day tomorrow and get the tin welded inside that goes over the torsion housing. I'll have to lift the body off for that. More updates and pix soon.
Hope everyone is having a great holiday season!!!

Was a short day today in the shop cut out some rust from the heater channels and test fit the main hoop for the RLR cage and did a bunch of welding.
Here's the stop I made for the front end yesterday, just a simple cable and arm on the front brace
Welded in the torsion cover tin today, turned out pretty good I think. Not show car quality, but I'm not building a show car, have one already. Also seen is my NHRA approved battery box. It's big so there is some expansion room inside if the battery explodes. It won't fit behind the seats so this is where it will probably end up. More weight over the rear wheels is also an added bonus for traction

Knocked a couple more things off the list this morning
Mounted my fuel pump on the right shock tower so it isn't so noisey in the car.
Made a new 3/4" steering shaft, tacked the quick release coupler to it and bolted on my aluminum wheel. eventually there will be a u-joint and bearing housing on the dash bar of the cage to hold it solid.
Also scraped off the calking on all the seams and some of the glue under the dash. Eventually I'll fire up the wire wheel and get dirty. VW sure liked their glue.......

It's CIPs 4" narrowed beam I drilled some holes in it to lighten it up and I changed the adjusters to the puma style.
When you stoppin' by? Quit working so hard

Cleaned the last of the glue out of the interior ground last last of the caulking out of all body seams. Glad that's done.....
Started fitting the rear hoop, had to stretch it in a couple of spots. Got all the floor plates bolted into place. Should get the hoop and front legs in the car in the next week depending on how busy my cage guy gets.
Today at lunch I picked up some more sheet metal and built a cover over the brake tubes and torsion raise plate gussets. Bought all the tools for doing dzus fasteners and dimpling panels and tried them out on here. Have to add one more at the front of the cover. In the back you can spot one of my new aluminum interior panels.
Tomorrow I'll start cutting the tin for the filler panels in the front door posts. I made the templates already, It's going to be fun fitting them, but even the templates being there really finish off the front end.

Got the right side filler in this morning before work. Between making a template, cutting and forming the tin and welding, it took about 3 hours. Once the welds are cleaned up a bit I'll seam seal everything before paint. Hopefully this will keep the salt and road dirt off the hinges and inner pillars
While everything was open I got the torch in on the hinge plates and got the door off. the drivers side had been changed, but the passenger side bolts were seized solid.
left side for comparison
right side. You can still see a factory paint mark "6" in the fenderwell

Here's the filler panels with a quick shot of primer on them. Have to do some rust repair on the bottom of the 1/4 panel. Now there's some metal to weld to.
At lunch I made a little cover for the shift coupler opening (see inset picture). Used a hood ornament with one pin broken off , traced the diameter onto some tin and cut out a circle. Used the circle to locate the holes on the floor tin and now the 2 pins on the emblem locate the cover on the torsion box. I'll use some magnetic sheet I have to hold in on.

Filled in the rear back of the heater channel, lower rear 1/4 panel and running board sill on the right side. Also fabricated a console for my gauges and switches and did a colour test with some flat green camo paint
I also got the main hoop fpr the cage fitted, had to strech the sides out a bit, but it now sits where it should. Have to shorten it by about 1/4" so it doesn't press into the roof. Tomorrow, I'm getting the belt bar fitted, and then I can weld in the main hoop and it's off to my cage builder to get the main 4 points dash and header bars put in. I can then finish the chassis fab and send it off to get blasted and painted (or powdercoated)
Rear Cover
Center Console with some gauges and switches

Go powder, you won't regret it (especially since your gonna flog that beast on the salt). SCP is not far from your work and they do an awesome job IMO. _________________ http://www.nuts.commercial-air.com/

They did my buggy chassis and rear bumper and Pete did all my suspension parts on the buggy. SCP charged me next to nothing to do the chassis so I'll probably go back to them for the pan. Hopefully Jim will have some time in the next week to get the cage in.
I started mocking up the motor and once that's done I'll send everything out for ballancing. Chris cut my wedgies to get the chambers down from 65cc. I got the crank in the case and threw a couple of pistons into check the deck height with my new CB high deck aluminum case, no shims under the barrels, .040 deck height

Got the hoop and belt bar in the car. Probably going for the cage build this weekend, if I get clearance from the chief
My fuel cell arrived today so mocked it up, will build my own mounts for it
Did a bunch of measuring and a dry run on the engine this weekend. Just waiting for a couple of little things then its off to the machine shop for balancing.
2332, Wedgeports, camshaft, 10.5:1 compression, CB 3.5mm raised deck case. Mahle pistons with CB lightweight pins, 48IDFs with 42mm venturis, 1 3/4 Bugpack merged header. The 6" airfilters came with the carbs but they won't fit in the car so I'll run short ones on the street.

Bent up the mounts to mount the fuel cell today and got everything bolted and welded together. Straps are 1"x 1/8. Much stronger than ones I could buy from RCI. Now I can start plumbing the tank, pump and filter.

Brad I know you want to drive this thing on the street some too, but do you really need a tank that big for the salt?
On my old autocross car we ran a 9/10 gallon tank off a lawn tractor. That was plenty for playing on the parking lots. But when we did ride arounds at the race track I could only go 2 laps and then had to come in for fuel! _________________ Mother Nature is a Mean Evil Bitch! |
