Thanks Smitty.
I fired up and ran in the motor yesterday. Everything went great except for a couple of oil leaks but no biggy. The leaks on the case are fixed so that made me happy. The engine sounds wicked with 12:1 compression. Get the valves set and make some carb adjustments and we should be good to go when I get it rolling. Another big step taken.....

Hey Buddy, we were just talking about you today. I look after my crew. You get one free pass. LOL Are we still on for September?
Found my oil leaks. Damn pushrod tubes and stainless valve covers.

Your pushrod and valve cover leaks seem ohh too familiar. I had big cam and 1.6 rockers. I was forced to run high lift valve covers, (stainless scat) and ran jaycee tubes since they say they are wide mouth.
Those stainless covers suck, even with 're bending bails, and doubling gaskets, still leaked, and as for pushrod tubes... the pushrods hit and made the tubes look like spirit fingers when you looked underneath as car is running squirting oil in little spurts.
The fix, good quality vintage bolt on covers, and the stock style wide mouth tubes and flared out as much as you can with 3/8 long extension. _________________ Gotta give my props to:

To the belt bitch, if you want your driver to go faster, once you have him all belted in, reach in and put a zip tie around his testicles and tighten it as much as you can. Tell him as soon as he gets finished you'll cut it off. Works every time.! |
ya never did specify what color you prefer to make you go faster _________________ Rick

After a month of nursing it around town and taking it easy, I finally got it up on the lazer aligner and we got things squared up. The car is only 2/10 out of square after raising the torsion housing and changing the front bullhead to the linkpin beam. I can live with that. With everything pointed in the right direction I could finally get on the gas and get it up on the cam and check out the flow of the ultra wedgies. GOOD LORD this thing hauls the mail and anything else I might want to. And the biggest kicker is, it's very drivable around town. Going to start playing with jets tomorrow. Did a couple of changes, but I've got the bung welded into the exhaust now and I can finally do some wideband tuning.
Leaving for Bonneville 3 weeks from today........I'm thinking Advil and Monster Java are going to be my friends for the foreseeable future........

Thanks Doc. I feel really sorry for all the people heading to Speed Week only to be rained out at the last minute. One ray of sunshine though is that Danny Thompson (son of Mickey) is bringing Challenger II to WOS and people are saying it is potentially a 500mph car. Some of the other big names may come out also. that would be such an experience.
What ever the car runs will be fine with me as long as it all stays together. Records are nice, but this has been a fun journey for me and it's all about personal achievement. That said I will be slightly disappointed if I don't reach the goals I think are obtainable. But there is so much that's out of my hands I'll take what I can get. Everything always looks good on paper.....then the real world kicks in, and sometimes your ass.

Get as much sorted out beforehand as you can, I don't work as well in the heat as I used to
But I'm ready since Speed Week was rained out and I need my salt fix.
How's the seat fit, buddy
Will be bringing the 3 inch blue zip ties you requested also to help obtain your goals. _________________ Rick

Rick, Don't worry there won't be much for you to do once you get me belted in. Just help me push the car up the line and it rolls pretty easy. Just have to play with some jetting , it seems to load up cruising around at around 2500. Might go up on the airs and try some different emusison tubes.
Doc, the leg is healing well. No problems with the bones, now I'm just dealing with a bunch of soft tissue stuff from the accident and the surgery. My mobility is still not 100%, some days it really sucks. Can't kneel on that knee at all and after a day at work my foot hurts like hell. Considering my foot got pushed 4 feet by the tire and then got driven over, it's not doing too badly and certainly could have been much worse. It can still work the clutch easy so that's all that matters LOL. Besides I'll have Rick to do all the work on the car for me so I can just sit under the beach umbrella end sip my lemon water.
Oh, and Rick. The seats fitting better all the time. Thanks for asking and that was a 13" zip tie, not 3".....JERK

Glad you ran it and dig it. It seems im one of few that like to drive a full blown race motor on the street. When you have a BIG motor, cam doesnt turn on till 4-5k, and its all tuned correctly, Its like driving a small 2liter on the street while under the poweband, and then feels like no2 when you hit the sweet spot on the cam. Its awesome, and just glad you dig it. Good job on the build man. _________________ Gotta give my props to:

Hey Brad. I just got back to Maryland on Monday from my race out in Vegas. It was definitely cooler out that way and just had a lot of rain in the desert but I think you will be fine by the time you get out there. You and I always talked about your buggy engine so I never realized you had a 57 project thread. I found you awesome thread here since I just bought a 57 off of the Samba on 8/1. Good luck out there. You sure work hard for it! Great work. Keep it up.
