i havent done much recently. i wanna get the notch finished soon i just need someone to do the body work and sort out what i need for roadworthy then itll be on the road. the fastback has been having some troubles atfirst the exhaust fell off but that all fixed now except some days it wont start or it starts and just randomly stops running at about 45 kmh. also i fitted new points & plugs and checked the timing but it still had a fuckload of over-run sometimes it keeps going for 2 minutes. and the sets of points i put in are completely kangarooted in about a week. i dunno whats goin on with it. ive been contemplating getting a different daily driver. and just sorting out the fastback and selling it to mum to pay for the notch. |
1. Running on = either your carb solenoids (the small tin cans with a elect lead on them) are not working or they are not in tight enough. to check turn the ignition on and then plug the elect lead in and out and listen for a click. if they click you need to tighten them in the carb body to stop leaks.
2. points burning can be for a number of reasons.
a. incorrect points gap
b. condensor not working or dogey
c. make sure when you check your points cap that the feeler gauge does not have oil on it.
d. vacuum advance diaphragm has a hole in it and is letting fuel vapor into the distributor
e. primary coil shorted internally(ie bad coil) check the resistance of the coil terminal LT to terminal, terminal to case, HT terminal to case, to LT terminals etc..
i drive my square every day.... it loves it .
Get it sorted and keeps smiling.
id come give you a hand but i have a big weekend of engine tuning myself, let me know next week if u still have probs, i might be able to help
oh p.s. to check the vacuum advance diaphragm pull the hose from the carb, push the distributor plate in then whilst holding it in put your thumb over the hose, release the plate and note how it returns. Then let go of the hose..... the plate should return some more.... if it doesnt then the diaphragm is broken .... but do it a few times to make sure. |
I added one for ya, that can also explain not starting sometimes.
I don't know about 2.d. ? you really think so that would burn points? |

well concrete is on its way, next sat is the day. had to delay it so the ground around the apron can dry out from all this shit rain.
Got a wicked ass price on the whole shebang!
nearly got 220m2 of 18mm new chip board for around 600 buks to line the whole workshop.
A guy was selling the whole factory worth of chip board and MDF for 6k and also individually sell them too. I got this estimate price and the next day I got him the correct measured amount I needed and he said the whole lot was sold.
FFFUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!!!!!!!
who ever bought those at a few bucks a pop, is going to make shit loads of money. There was a few thousand sheets of brand new chip board.
man the stuff you find and miss out on ebay
I have noted all the correct building materials I need are on ebay in bucket loads for dirt cheap and new, yet the building suppliers and timber yards can not get anything I need as its apparently "obsolete sizes"
well there you go. |

Yep, long weekend coming up, hopefully finish up all the required welding on the square and knock over a working bee at Eccles at the same time - you down for a visit Will?
Help - Part needed
Also, we have little issue here with a dual arm steering column for a late square i just got for Pia's car. The wiper arm got snapped off in transit from Sydney ( via Aus Post with brainless packing from the seller ), and after removing 3 screws, should have been 4 btw , have removed the whole indicator/wiper mechanism. Yet another wtf moment as to why the seller didn't just do that to ship
While the majority of the steering column can still be used for the car, we need to find out if this mechansim would be compatible with what the Beetles were running of the same era perhaps, or if anyone may have one of these in a complete state to get hold of? Pics of part in need of below.

And IF the golf has intermittant wipers, that's a nice bonus. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof
