|
|
About the only place on my 1970 Fastback where there is SERIOUS rust is in the LH side A pillar. Virtually every other area only had surface rust, and this has been easily treated by wire brushing away the surface rust, acid treating it, and then painting it with rust inhibiting paint.
The A pillar has primarily rusted due to a totally perished windscreen rubber which allowed water to enter the pillar during the many years when the car as outside in the weather. It needs replacing from about half way up the windscreen down to the sill.
I have an excellent metal fabrication man who is quite capable of fabricating a new A pillar, although it will take time (and time = $ ) , but the only other option is to find an otherwise "dead" Type 3 which still has a good LH A pillar, although I fear that if a car is bad elsewhere, it is unlikely to have a good usable A pillar.
I can't find any such parts in Australia (not saying they don't exist, but so far haven't managed to find one), but was wondering if anyone in USA / Canada knows of an available and serviceable LH A pillar ??? If so, I believe it would be cost effective to ship it to Aus because it is not that heavy or bulky.
I believe a Fastback would use the same A pillar as a notchback or squareback, but please correct me if I am wrong.
Any help / suggestions welcome / appreciated.
Couple of pics of my A pillar attached.

You might try contacting Mike Fisher on here. He cuts up type 3s on a regular basis, and might have most of what you're after already cut out (he might need to trim it some).
I wonder if the door seal was also leaking too (besides the windshield). _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof
