I am comparing a 36hp Dansk and a VW logo muffler. I am just wondering if these measurements I took are typical or were there variations over the years?

resurrecting the thread. I noticed the difference as well. I have 3 non-logo mufflers. 2 of unknown age that are longer and smaller diameter 27 inches (69 cm) x 4 inches (10 cm). One has been installed on my car for well over 20 years (possibly double that) and the other nearly as long on a bench engine. Both have a small brace going to each tip outlet. The other muffler is a dansk was purchased new in 2008 and is 4.5 (11.5 cm) x 26 inches (66 cm) and has no brackets at the tips. Searching for information, I found this thread http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=442668&highlight=muffler and am now under the assumption that the longer mufflers are earlier and the fatter muffler is a later "universal" design. [EDIT] I used CM r/t mm and rounded - the diameter measurements correspond exactly to the initial post. |

I'm wondering if the mufflers you are showing are the factory type for say a 1960 36hp?? Am also wondering if there is a change in the 61-62 stale air 36 hp muffler??.
I do know that the 1963-1965 36 hp engine which is a fresh air system uses the 40 hp engine exhaust system and two port extensions to make the 40 muffler work and would be the last muffler variation on a 36hp engine.

Not sure on that Helfen. I purchased the logo muffler from WW and it was described as NOS. It appeared to be in an original box. The fit was good and it does have the support braces. Length on the logo muffler is 26.75 inches.

Does anybody know what the internal construction is like with the Dansk? Do they have the internal pipes inside like the originals to make equal length primaries, or is it just a big can? |

If the Dansk construction is the same as those made for another German air cooled engine, the construction is likely a can and prone to cracking where the pipes meet said can. I hope yours don't crack. |
