Is it just me, or is this a nuclear power plant on VW's property in Wolfsburg?

It's a cooling tower, commonly used to remove heat caused by manufacturing. I doubt it is nuclear.

I'd love to take a spin on the test track just to the west of it Smile

It's not manufacturing. Nothing that big would ever be used for cooling. Take a look at the coal beds and cooling water ponds adjacent to the tower and the symetric buildings to the right. Definitely a power plant.

It VW's own powerplant, coal powered...

Visited the plant last year and is HUGE (even that word is too small Smile)
The kids had a lovely day in Autostadt (a VW museum just to the east of the old powerplant - here: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=wolfsburg&ll=52....6&z=16)

mind the 88's as well-you will all get the coordinates for the archival caches and museum--off limits just like schools and dairys.

A pretty impressive amount of coal stock piled. I wonder is they have supply problems which require so much reserve. I worked at a power plant of about that same size years ago and they kept enough reserve on hand to make it through any anticipated railroad or miners strike.

They need it with what they're producing these days, too.
