Anyone here interested in HDR photography? I am not a pro, just an amateur who tries to make good pics of nice car. Here's few of my pics. Show yours

for the ignorant, me, what is HDR photography, I can see it has a 'painterly' quality to the picture, but how is it done?
The pictures and cars look beautiful.

HDR stands for "high dynamic range." It's a technique that combines (usually) three or more different exposures of the subject to give a photo that has detail in the brightest as well as darkest areas of the photo - more like the eye can see. And, as you noted, when manipulated, it can also give a painterly, or even surrealist look to the photo. _________________ '71 Ghia cabriolet |

I think people think it's cheating because digital software makes it so much easier than the traditional method but the end result is everything...not how you got there. |
That is EXACTLY what I was thinking, “This is like Ansel Adams on steroids.”.
Not to hijack this thread, but I had to write that although I'm not much of a photographer, (lousy, in fact) I'm a big fan of Ansel Adams - here's a pic from the top of my (soon to be demolished) fireplace mantle:
And it's even signed by the late Mr. Adams!
I inherited this book from my older brother, who passed on last year – it was one of his most prized possessions.
BTW, what is that object above your Karmann badge, John?
Those are some AMAZING pictures! Thanks for posting those. My interest in photography may have been re-kindled by this. |

No...it's a more natural enhancement. The principal is not new, it's the digital equivalent of Ansel Adams' "Zone System" in traditional film photography which has been around since the 1940s.

Yeah, yeah... I know. Spent way too many hours myself in darkrooms, whiffing chemicals, developing medium format Ilford and printing. I'm quite familiar with the Zone System; Adams too - my fine art photography mentor was himself a prodigy of Adams and spent several years as his assistant. Sadly, he passed away year before last. _________________ David Ruby

Also tried some HDR photoshopping. What do you think about it?

Looks beautiful Gerard.
Did you make it from a single image or did you shoot 3 images at the same time...also did you use Photoshop HDR or some other software?
Everyone has personal preferences when making pictures...I always use a lot of contrast as it saturates the colours better. Sometimes I overdo it and it can look artificial but I always shoot and process pictures to please myself...if anyone else likes it, that's a bonus. |
Hi John,
Thanks.
Just took a single image and worked around in Photoshop. Still looking for the best settings and just been fiddling around.

Have you tried the Photomatix Software: http://www.hdrsoft.com/ it's a free download but leaves a "Photomatix" watermark on your pictures until you decide to pay for the licence. I found it a lot easier to get good effects than using Photoshop.
I make the 3 different exposures using Photoshop...load those 3 exposures to Photomatix and create the image I want and then you can manipulate that image again in Photoshop. _________________ John.

I want to put it as my desktop background but it's too small.
