Today I took my 1973 Volkswagen Superbeetle German Look project out for some pics (by me).

It is a '73 Super with a Topline Parts MaXX strut conversion (with new bushings and strut brace), disc brakes conversion (drilled out for a 4x100 bolt pattern with press in studs), lowered 2 1/2", new interior with Scat Procar seats (modified to fit in the VW) and Watson Streetworks American Autowire wiring harness.

The motor is a 2187cc Type 1 based EMPI bubble head case based motor with CB Performance 044 heads (42x37.5), a CB 3qt sump, Scat 1.4:1 rockers and dual Weber IDF 44 carbs. The exhaust is a merged setup with an A1 muffler.

The interior is all new with a lot of dynamat laid down with new carpet over it. The rear seat was deleted, but replaced was a vinal wrapped shelf and speaker box.

Literally everything is new and so far is an absolute blast to drive (even though the carbs are a b**** to tune).

Here's a really crappy cell-phone pic (I'll take some good quality pics tomorrow):

The wheels are 17x7. The front tires are 205/40R17 and the rear tires are 255/40R17. Those are stock sized fenders. With the front I'm running the Topline Parts MaXX strut and had to flatten the brake hose bracket to prevent rubbing (wasn't using it anyways). On the rear I had to clearance the bump stops.

I'm not normally a fan of colored engine tin but your motor looks great. Excellent job on the whole car.

What brand of rims are those? I want those exact ones but am having a hard time finding the 4x130 bolt pattern.

Actually it is a Toyota wheel in a 4x100. It took me a little time to find something with the right backspacing. I went with the 4x100 so the drum/rotor would be stronger with the new bolt pattern. Cast into OE VW drums/rotors are "spines" along the bolt mounts for strength. I was able to have my local machine shop plug the stock 4x130 holes and then drill 4x100 and install press in studs.

The wheels/tires were purchased fairly early in my project, around 3 years ago, and I can't really remember exactly, but I *think* they are Sportmax wheels.

In the 4x130 bolt pattern you will find 8 or so aftermarket wheels available to you. What you see in UltraVW or HotVWs is literally all that is out there.

Pretty much all small to medium front wheel drive cars from the 80s till recently are 4x100, and the rest are 4x114.3, its just some of the euro stuff that are weird 4x98 and 4x108 patterns.

Thats why I went 4x100 with mine, nearly all rims like these ones are multistud, you can see how they have to 2 patterns so they are availible everywhere.

Nice job, maybe post some pics of your bug in the Germanlook bug thread?
It will fit in well

If you are looking for wheel options, you could always go with a Porsche 5x130 pattern. Pre-drilled VW drums and rotors are readily available [CB Performance, CIP1, Mid America etc]. That'll open you up to a lot of Porsche rims that would work well with the German look.

I believe you can also buy blank drums that you can drill any pattern in. Consider 5 x 100. That'll open you up to a lot of late model VW and Audi rims. Again, they would work well with a German Look theme.

I'd have to dig in the file to verify it on the order form, but I *think* I remember it being ET40. I spent a lot of time finding a wheel that was the right offset and a lot of research into what I needed, but right now I'll be damned if I can remember what that number was. Makes me feel like I'm getting old

haha yeah i know that feeling. i am going to lower my car 2.5 in the next month or so and everything i have read is different. how much did you have to trim the bump stop plate in the rear? did you have to change out the forward most bolt where the IRS connects to the spring plate to a flat headed bolt and counter sink it? guess i can start bugging Joel again too..lol
