|
|
Okay boys and girls, THIS IS IT!
Darlene and I went on the Manx OBX trip and had an awesome time. We rented a buggy for the weekend and it worked out great. The only problem was,,, the buggy was pink. Oh, pink or not the buggy was not mine. It just did not feel right; the guy that builds and makes product for them does not have one on the road.
After more than a year of not having my own buggy on the road and building for others; it is time for me to do one for myself again.
As most of you know, I am a Manx collector but unfortunately with the shop move we had to thin the herd. I sold my Manx I Freshly painted, the Tow’dster and sold my 2276cc Autocraft motor built by Joe Aragona. I also lost my Imp. With that I have accumulated a lot of parts for my projects. Besides my regular inventory that is. My idea is to build a Manx II on an IRS chassis. Now, I do have one but I use it for product development. I really did not want to do that one. I floated my idea past Keith at OBX, It turns out last year we picked up a Manx II for him to build. He told me he wanted to go a different direction and the body was available. Needless to say I jumped on it.
Here’s the plan;
Build a rugged mild street fighter with more of a sophisticated flare to it. Something I would still hit the beach with thought. It will have a lot of comforts a European sports car would have such as leather interior, seat heat, stereo, GPS and so on. Here’s the twist. It must be done by May 2012.
So let’s get started.
The body; A Manx II body sporting the new Meyers Kick-out rear deck and vented side pods. The add on’s will be a Manxter rear bumper, Manx front bumper with fog light mounts welded on, stainless steel roll bar, chrome tail lights, our new headlights to be débuted soon as well as a lot of other items. BTW, I am using the single hoop roll bar. I need to put one of my tops on as well as “The Difference”.
The chassis; I was considering a Berrien or Barret but decided against them as I will not gain any real benefit from them for this project that I can’t get from a VW chassis. I can make it stiff enough for my needs. Besides I like the look of the VW chassis.
The transmission; I have a Porsche 912 unit that I may use. Otherwise I will build a freeway flyer using a Rhino case I have in stock. Don’t know yet.
The motor; I have a brand new 1914cc hydraulic unit that was earmarked for the Imp but sadly never made it in. I will be doing a Porsche fan kit on it and painting to match. I will be using a Manx sidewinder exhaust to stay with the Manx motif.
The interior; will be mostly leather with diamond quilted inserts. The carpet will be what’s called “Daytona” made by AC Dorsett it will be a multi piece hand bound. It will have a center console that will start under the dash and go to the rear wall hopefully giving me some storage space and an arm rest. I will be using most of a full set of Pro Comp Ultra Lite gauges that I got for the SR as the 2276cc was supposed to go in it. I have not decided on the stereo yet but needless to say it will be overkill.
Color; Right now the body will be metallic silver and the interior will be bright red. This may change.
The good thing is I do have most of the parts. I do have the new Manx stuff on order and should have them in a few short weeks.
Heres to hoping I make my deadline.
Here are some photos.
More to come. _________________ Google this.

Count on it!
Have you given any thoughts to the battery? It looks like there's a big hole behind the passenger seat. Seriously consider the Odyssey PC680 battery.

That and all other holes will be fixed. I will be making my own.
I have an AMG Power cell s925.
I will never ever use an Odyssey again. I had issues with them on my 51 Pontiac. _________________ Google this.

About time you get off your lazy, sorry ass and do something. It's been too long since you last had "Rainbow Brite" on the road.
If you really want to put the pressure on, post a completion date.... and stick to it.
More of a kick in the ass than a push, but I know you love a challenge _________________ Glenn

Just pulling your chain. I know you'll do awesome job, just like to see you driving again by the spring. I know personal projects can be put on the back burner when customer project take all you time.
You seemed really happy when driving the Imp and it's time for you get get back behind the wheel and enjoy the fruits of your labor.
BTW.. I spoke to Jim a few hours ago. _________________ Glenn

Since your getting parts for a Manx Kick Out, why not just buy the whole kit.
The opening front hood sure is nice for the storage area and getting to the wiring does not require standing on you head.
No worries about scratching a new paint job or having to fill holes that always seem to show up later under that new paint.
I really like mine and for what I wanted to do was the cheaper and faster way go to have the buggy up and running.
And If you went with the Kick Out SS the curved windshield it makes a big differences with wind buffeting and noise. The curved windshield of my Manxter verses the flat one on my Kick Out even with the wind wings is a big differences. You can carry on a conversation at freeway speeds without having to yell.
As to any of the AGM batteries they don't like high voltage either from a charging system that puts outs to much voltage or a standard battery charger. Only takes minutes to cook the acid that is in the mat. _________________ Joseph

I don't have that much expendable cash. I still have to get a few high end items as well. I have most everything and My repairs never show. I also wanted a more refined finish to the body so paint is the way to go for this project even if I was doing an SS.
This is what I am going for on the seats and side panels.
I had to add this.
We have a new set of really kool headlights that are comming out soon. I want to show them and other items off. _________________ Google this.

Today was about getting everything organized as I have two buggies in the shop that have to get done and two more that will be coming in this winter. My build is the most extensive. I will be working on two at a time for the next month.
I pulled down the rotisserie and I have started to set up what we like to call the magic shelf. This shelf is the place to put all the parts ordered. It seems to amaze the crew that helps me from time to time, when they say “I need this or that.” I say, “go to the shelf.” And it’s there. Hence, “The Magic Shelf”.
Tomorrow I hope to finish up and start on the chassis. I will be completely disassembling the one for my buggy and cutting it. Then it goes to the sand blaster before welding. I want a completely clean weld. I will also be cutting my customers as well.
I will post photos tomorrow if all goes well. I may even set up my GoPro. Thursday and friday I have convertible tops to do so I am thinking no buggy work untill saturday. _________________ Google this.
