OMG, thank goodness they are ok. That is a nasty hit. I wish them a quick recover.

"Life happens while you are making other plans"...or words to that effect seem appropriate. Sorry to hear about your daughter's accident, glad to hear it wasn't worse.

Tom, I'm sure you'd rather have the car done, but I also think it will be cool for people to see the "bones" of what you are doing in progress, just as we have been following it here. The finished product of course is supposed to hide all the seams, repair work, etc, but the crowd you run with will probably appreciate it more being able to see it in development. Taking it to Carlisle at whatever stage you have it I think is great, and might even give a few potential customers a better appreciation of your skills than they might have if you had a complete, shiny, brand new lookin' buggy to show them.

Of course none of that matters to a few of your friends that I am sure will come up with a number of creative ways to haze you for not making your self determined deadline!

Glad to hear daughter and friend are OK Tom! That's all that really matters. Mine has totaled 2 cars in the <4 years she's been driving - fortunately both not super serious accidents! I just hope she's learning something!

I've come to the realization there is no way my custom Deserter chassis will be ready or even painted in time to bring up to Carlisle this year. Plus, the day job is commanding a lot more of my available time lately - looks like my trip (if not working) will be a day trip to the show this year.

I agree, nice to see quality work "in progress". I think all the builders out there (isn't that about everybody reading this forum??) can really appreciate seeing what's being done - vs. the finished glossy show car.

Jeff

Hey Tom, the lack of an update lately has me worried. How's your daughter?

Hi all, My daughter is doing fine. Stitches are out and now hobbling around getting in to more trouble. Thanks for asking.

Missing the paint deadline really screwed things up. I have been trying to get the vents done but it is getting busy around here. I did manage to get the tranny case painted last Saturday while waiting for the vent molds to cure. Other then that not much. My schedule is completely shot. I am going to focus on a couple of things for Keith and Steve that have to get done for the show so I do not know if I will be updating for a couple of weeks. We shall see.

The vent pods are cool! I wish I had the skills you have. It will be sharp when you get it in paint.

X2 Those have real marketability. Can you make a mold of the pods with the vent already in? I would also understand if you wanted to maintian the exclusivness. Top notch workmanship, envy your skills.

Tom, Just wanted to give cudo's for such a detail-oriented build, as well as for giving us the how-to's on what you're doing and why. My son (JC) and I are building our first fiberglass buggy based on a '70 ghia chassis. Almost all parts are new, since I bought the bare chassis and had my brother's mechanic shorten it (he's done it many times before). We're learning as we go, and reading all the Samba posts as we hit the hard parts. My question to you on this post is - what's the device in the picture that looks like a coil and appears to be plumbed into the brake reservoir - the device is secured to the passenger side of the top hat. I've seen electric fuel pumps there, but this one's confusing me... Thanks again, and PLEASE keep up the posts and pics - we're about 6 weeks behind you! Greg

That's his electric fuel pump. I can show you where the Canadian location is if you like. It's not connected to the brake reservoir, it's an optical illusion.

I did not look closely at that picture before, but not only is Tom pumping brake fluid with a complex electric over hydraulic system, he also has the narrowest beam in Guinness World Records history. Laughing

Speaking of fuel pumps, I know this is way overkill but you must admit it's a pretty clean/cool setup:
