Hi Dale,
are bearing races also snug and fit?
Thanks for the reply,

Kinda sorta.... Not interference but snug... Precision slip fit... Some time you have to polish spindles if there is a burr or rust on them but they should not be "loose"...
If they are real sloppy you may have wrong bearings... Believe later BJ bearing (inside) has larger inside diameter for larger spindle...

Hi,
I am rebuilding my front wheel bearings and brakes and have some questions about the spacers behind the bearings. Both sides seem different.

I know this is an old thread but what is the suggested method to get those spacers out....I am rebuilding my from brakes (see this thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=636943 ) and I cannot get these off. I tried a puller but I cant get the "hooks" around since its so close to the backing plate. I tried chiseling it out but they are not budging. I just sprayed a liberal amount of PB Blaster and I was going to try again tomorrow.
Also can the backing plate come off with out removing the spacer? Really i just want to remove the backing plate to clean up and paint before the new brake hardware goes on. |

You might try breaking it loose with a pipe wrench. I don't imagine that will bugger it up any worse than the chisel already did. _________________ "Just $99 down and $64 a month for 36 months buys you a brand new Volkswagen Beetle!"

should I just purchase new spacers? I am sure these may get pretty beat up. do those need to be as smooth as the bearing racers? Do I need to worry about damage to the spindles?
In reality all I wanted to do is remove the backing plate- does that spacer need to be removed to take the backing plate off? |

I might be mistaken, but doesn't hub seals run on spacers...

LOL- yup that did it. Just need it to break loose then I was able to pry it out...and yes it did bugger it up quite a bit. Oh well - one more thing to order, fortunately its pretty cheap.
BTW it looks like the backing plate would have come off w/o having to remove that spacer. Live and learn.

Sorry if this is an old thread and don't mean to thread jack... but what's the part that sits on the spacer? I appear to have misplaced it though I don't even remember taking it off... but putting everything back together now I noticed one is missing a part... have looked through my books and online and can't find a name for it. Have found pictures and stuff with it on it but no actual name for it so I can find a replacement. any ideas?

In the top picture the inner race in the inboard wheel bearing is still in place. It appears to be an original style ball bearing race. The seal race is inboard on that on both spindles. In the top picture the seal race looks rusty and likely to leak. The amount of rust on that spindle would concern me as well. In the bottom picture the seal race looks like it has been damaged trying to chisel the wheel bearing race away from it so it can be pulled. It could damage the seal when the drum is installed unless the outboard edge is carefully deburred. _________________

ah, so are the parts replaceable or should I just get 2 new complete spindles? I had heard of carefully using a file for the rust but not sure, and didn't even notice the other one had been damaged. |

No need for new spindles ... The seal race or spacer what ever you wish to call it is replaceable .... IF actual seal surface is not damaged or rusted, you can carefully dress (file) any damages smooth and just go with it.... If it were me, I would just replace both spacers...

As mentioned before it appears to be inner race of from wheel (ball) bearing....

ah sorry I missed that... so I have all new bearings basically it's the part that comes in the center of them? Sorry I'm not entirely familiar with all the parts and pieces yet. |

Ball bearings consists if inner bearing race and set of caged ball bearings and a outer race.... As three parts...
A roller bearing set is almost same thing, a inner race and a caged roller bearings assembled as a unit (does not come apart), and separate outer race....
See a difference...
