The rear wheel well is different in those 2 photos.
The magazine cover one looks wacky so maybe it is retouched. |
Yes, and both of them look wrong. |

They are there ... barely visible because of the bright illumination. |

I will dig out the magazine from storage in the next day or so and post the pics showing the walk through...it is covered more in the back of the scanned issue of VW Informationen.
It was my intention to start a thread on this Bus ages ago but some body beat me to it...this is one seriously kool bus, and that signwriting is pretty damn good as well.
Watch this space. |

I've been drooling over that picture of the deluxe for over 25 years.....never even noticed that the panel was a slider. That's one commercial rig I'd like to see turn up in a barn or warehouse some day soon. _________________ Transporter Restorations

I know of a guy who had a walk thru panel, he almost sold it. _________________ Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude.

All these walkthrough barndoors are pretty common nowadays unless you've got a logoed slider walkthrough.
what would be more amazing: finding this bus or a barndoor binz or ??? |

There's another bus with the extra long deluxe corner body trim. So it's defiantly not a dodgy picture touch up. Those extended rear corner windows seem quite popular to.
That slider is the NUTS!!!!
Must have been built atleast March 51 as the show was in April 51.
I surpose this also makes a 51 deluxe with sliding door and walkthru theoretically possible
Also note the rear hatch !!!
But the question is... Was it a rear window bus? It must have been built just around the intro of the rear window.

Lets play spot the difference.
Different pressings in the inner frame liners/ walkthru Walls. With the logical early 51 6 rib frame liner. But note how the rear pressings are not covered up by the bulkhead sheet folding round the corners as in latter barndoor walkthrus (one pressing covered on the passenger side, two on drivers).
Different number and location of horizontal supports.
Anything else? |

A lot of those published photos aren't photos at all, but artist renderings, which I'm sure some of you know. Especially the one of just the BOCO bus side shot. Then look at the photos of the slider handle. It's about 8 inches long in one photo and then in the other, right next to it, the guy is opening the slider and handle is on backwords. I'm not saying the bus doesn't or didn't exist, but it would be tough to verify details from renderings from different artists. _________________ 53 Hatch Barndoor

now, that it looks like the large corner glasses are original, there is a good chance that this bus is an early dlx

the pressings on the side of the seat stands are different. Andre's are here:
The sliders seem to be larger, looking like these from the only picture I could quickly find in the gallery:
Given how early that slider is and some of the strange differences could this be a prototype of sorts whipped together for the event? |
