Patricks 3.25" needle bearing beam is ready. As are 5.25" hybrid welded spindles for Boxster Brakes.
When can we come down and install the parts Joe?

WEll i have a couple carppy cell phone pics to post up. I will get more pics to0morrow with the camera, Ive got Patricks cargo floor stripped out and trial fit the new floor halves and all looks good as usual from Gerson!!!!! I also have all the doors final welded and they are ready fro epocy primer and final bodywork!!!!! I will make sure I step up my camera skills because this girl is going to getting real nice and solid quickly!!!!

Sorry i didnt get these pics up last night for you Patrick, I didnt get out of the shop till 2:30a,!!!! BUt I got your rusted front top hat channel removed . Then started replcing the lower bulk head sheet metal area.. I also got your right front out rigger on and lower B pillar section welded in. And that ugly frme rail on the right side???? well i got her taken care of for the most part. Still have a little clean up to do on that but its close. Heres a few pics for you and I will try and make sure to update later tonioght as well.

Do you guys paint the inside of the outrigger after you spot weld it into place, but before the tophat goes on?
What about that shiny frame metal that is hidden by the outrigger? Do you have a procedure to protect that bare metal from corrosion?
I have my outriggers clamped into place, but I feel like I should paint over that green primer. You guys look like you do terrific work; I enjoy following your projects. |

thanks for the compliments Kingcory, We use a lot of weld thru primer. Its hard to see from the pics but the bottom of the tophats get coated nd inside of outrigger and frame area as well. Does it really work???? But i feel more comfortable using it and it disnt seem to burn off after welding. Also when were done with all the welding everything will get blasted again and then coated with epoxy primer before th floors go in.
Patrick, We wrapped up your right side frame repairs today and got your rear out rigger welded in. I also got the left side section of the front top hat welded in and all crossmembers ground smooth. I have a small amount of clen up work first thing in te mornming then I will blast the entire cargo structures then its time to weldin your new floors!!!!!

Thanks for the props guys.
Patrick ive been slacking on pics for you and I dont have a bunch tonight hat are up to date. My camera took a crap on me the other day. Should be back up and running this wek. I did get all your crossmembers sandblasted and shot with epoxy and rest of them cleaned up and welded in place. Then cargo floors trimmed and welded in place!!!! I also sandblasted front cab area and epoxy primed the floor wheel tubs divider wall and dash. Then got them in 2K primer too . I didnt get everythuing up there in primer due to I have more welding to do but the majority of it is in primer. I also got yoru right side long rocker all wleded into place. This girl is just about solid again!!! Most of the larger sections of rot are repaired. I will hopefully be able to get you some more pics in a day or two depending if i make it to walmart to grab a camera!!!

please share your secret - I tried using the same 3M brand and I cannot get the weld to burn thru or hold.

Zuggbug,
I dont have a secret i have never had any welding problems at all with this stuff, Ive also used a nother one from SEM brand and it worked well also. I did try a can once called copperweld or something like that and it welded horrible with real bad spatter. Anytime I am welding through the 3m brand its never given me a problem it welds like bare metal! I wish i had better advice for you!

Also Zuggbug im using 75%/25% argon/co2 gas on my welders not sure what your using but maybe thats the difference? i definetly see it being a problem if you were to use a flux core wire welder!

thanks for the reply, I am using 75%/25% argon/c02 gas, I might just need to turn up the heat.
I have the same 3m product you are using and I shake it up before use and I have tried just a light mist and I have also done a heavy coat. I drill holes in the outer metal and puddle weld and as soon as I am done and unclamp, the panel just falls off. So I just grind off where I am welding and weld metal to metal.
I will give it one more try.

Zuggbug,
I wonder if you are moving the puddle into the new metal enough, or just plug welding the hole up without actually welding the new metal?
If so, and you are welding an outrigger to a frame, for example, and you said you are doing a plug weld, I wonder if your heat is too low and your wire speed is too high. Probably gonna need some heat to penetrate that heavy frame.
Go to your local metal shop and get some heavy scrap similar to a bus frame and pick up some 16 gauge sheet scrap and try some different settings. once you get nice penetration move to your bus.
Experiment on scrap. I'll try to to pick up a can of that 3m primer and do some test runs this weekend, and let you know how it goes. |

I think Kingscory hit the nail on the head for you Zuggbug?
Another thing i have seen guys do is make there rossette hole (plug weld) holes to small when there welding to thicker metal. If im welding sheetmetal to sheetmetal, Like say upto 16 ga. I can get away with a 3/16th inch hole. BUt like on these outriggers to heaveier steel like 14 ga and up i step up to a 1/4" hole and try to always strike my arc on the base metal in the middle of the hole. So like he just said get your puddle good and hot in the center and work your way to the outside to fill in the rossette! Hope this helps so crank up the heat and let us know how it works out for you.

Patrick, Heres a couple pics of your right side rocker all assembled and welded in place, I also got your right side jack points welded in and the right side of you undercarriage is ready for final sandblast and epoxy primed and 6then installing the belly pan on this side! I the flipped her over onto the other side and gearin up to get it whipped out as well.
