Hello All,

I ran across a guy that says he has a complete 68 bug transaxle for sale. But he says it's a 5 lug. I have a 64 that I am restoring and I need a better tranny to push my 1641cc. Did eary 68's have a 5 lug SwingAxle??

Unless the seller has Thing drums on it.

Thing drums are noticeably wider than type 1's. You'll know the difference.

I would bet they are just 5 lug type 1 drums with washers between the castle nut and drum nose.

My early 68 swing axle came with 5 lugs. PO probably did that though. He was trying to back date it.

Could be Type-III drums! that was A very comin up grade back in the heyday of the cal-lookers Wink and its A direct bolt on...

Or he could just be full of shit and has no real idea of what year the tranny is Wink

One way to tell if it would be a 68' trans would be the z bar mount on the axle tubes.

Its probably a '67 if it has the z-bar mounts and five lug drums. The gearing of the later trans would match up to a 1641 better, 4.125 vs 4.375:1.
