I know the shows listing here on the Samba is a wealth of information, but the family is planning our first trip from the wilds of western Canada to the North Eastern States in August. Is there a few major "don't miss" events that aren't listed yet? I don't mind planning the mid week events around a VW show/swap! |

The Terryville show in Connecticut is a good show. Vintage? It depends who decides to show up. Less and less old cars are coming to shows. It's not much fun taking first in class when you're the only one in it.
also the Maine show happens like the first weekend in August. I haven't been in a few years, but may this year. |

I went to the Terryville show in 2009 (I was back visiting family). Other than the fact that is was hotter than the surface of sun I thought it was a good show. Dolly Parton would have made a mint selling shade. _________________ Bill |

That was a hot one (and I brought skis!), usually not that hot. As Dave said above, from a vintage perspective, it's kind of hit and miss. A few years back we made a decent effort to break the split record and a whole pile showed up. The interior wasn't done on my '50, but I drove it down anyway with a towel on the seat spring cage!
Still a good show, I go for the people more than the cars. Same for Litchfield. Don't seem to see much of any early stuff in the swaps anymore.
New England needs another vintage driving event weekend like the old DKF....

Anything in CT, DC, MA, ME, MI, NY, RI, PA which are likely the states we'll hit in August. I guess i am spoiled when traveling to California as there seems to be lots of events going on there. |

I wish! Working in eastern Canada, and thought when I'm done travel through New England and down a bit further. Maybe the work will pay for some of the work on the Zwitter! |

CT VW Association runs a fun one in Connecticut, usually on a Sunday in October, ref: http://www.ctvwa.org/

I will have to think about doing this in 2013, it would be my zwitters homecoming. It's a Hoffman car that spent it's first 21 years in North Haven, CT. _________________ Bill |

Hey Brian,
I'm in Moncton, NB. Shoot me an email and you can visit my new additions to the shop and we can trade VW stories.

That's pretty cool! There were a couple of pretty big split window musters at a couple of CT VW events several years back also--the summer of 2000 to be exact. The first one was at the long-since defunct CT VW Association show that used to be held in Norwalk, CT, at a scenic mansion, ref:
Here's the photo caption I added on the first samba image page - http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/album_page.php?pic_id=263713 - which also references the record being broken again at the Terryville gathering of that same year:
-----
Norwalk, CT record splits lineup, June 2000
View A - Scanned from a composite image of prints, by Samba member "Rome."
Per Bill Silvestri's article in the February 2001 DKF newsletter (that I was able to locate online via a google search), there were 15 split window Beetles mustered here (what do you know, I finally counted them for myself, and Bill was correct; and as I recall, this "record gathering" was eclipsed by one car for a total of 16, a couple of months later, at the "Connecticut Bug-A-Fair" event in Terryville, CT)...
-----
There was also another splits muster at Terryville only a few years ago, which I was on my way driving to in my '50 Bug, but then developed some car trouble, and never made it. Perhaps anyone else who participated in that one can chime in...
Anyway, with enough lead time, maybe it's time to start thinking possibly about another attempt at a "record" splits gathering in CT (say, either Litchfield or Terryville), in the summer of 2013...
Perhaps I'll tow-bar my car to that one... _________________ Stock Steve

I remember that year, that was a great showing of splits. ALL KINDS of splits. Organizer Chuck P. promoted it by allowing any split free admission and registration.
Now if we could just get them all running, and doing a 3 day weekend fall cruise in New England, THAT would be awesome.....! _________________ John Henry
