Coker bias-ply white walls makes driving a little more interesting at times.

I've run both- and I'm amazed how fast the Port-a-walls seperate and look like crap on a radial tire. As an issue of safety- they compromise the tire bead-to-rim bond. They are probably fine for cruising- but I'd never cook down the freeway with a layer of rubber keeping my radial tire from completely sealing the rim again. Also, if you have a tire run low quickly (like happens when you're at work)- you'll wear the portawall before the tire's sidewall. Then, when you air up- you get to look at your damage henceforth.
Get Firestone 2-3/4" Ww from Coker or Lucas- mine have be great for far longer than they should. |
This is a fact! My tire guys were pretty good and had problems getting the inserts to seat properly. Also, since most guys that use porta walls (yes, Ive been one of them) are being CHEAP, the money does add up! I installed a pair, only to find that they distorted and started ripping one month after I bought them. Had to either buy a new set, or get rid of them. I bought some different wheels instead. If you are planning on running low but also want whitewalls, be prepared to pay for the custom tires...or just raise the car and get a common size. |

Universal tire also sells the white walls - if you are going stock sizes, just bite the bullet and do real whitewalls IF you are actually going to drive the car - it doesnt really matter for a trailer queen.
Not getting into the debate and "I heard this and that". This is what I know - I am running Atlas porta walls temporarily on my VW woodie's stock sized radials until I nail down the tire/wheel combo and have had to replace the rear set already after 1500 miles. They were installed carefully, everything was clean - I reseated them after a couple hundred miles, and all that. What I have found is the you really need to run higher pressures to reduce the sidewall flex and they will be pretty happy. I am currently running 22/32 and I would expect them to last for quite a while with this pressure.
But over the winter I expect to nail down what I am going to stay with and will bite the bullet and get actual white walls. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.

What size are those white walls and are they radials?
That's the exact look I'd like to have.

They are 2.25" white walls. They are radials, 165 R15. The car is stock height. I bought them from Coker and picked them up a few months later at the Portland Swap Meet to save shipping, but apparently you can find them at other online vendors who don't charge for shipping. I have been very happy with the tires. I would add that I had mine installed with Dyna Beads, not lead balancing weights, and the ride is great! _________________ Plate of shrimp |

I had my new Coker tires balanced with weights on the inside only and it's not working very well. I get a noticeable vibration above 58 MPH. I've heard about the Dyna Beads but I've never been brave enough to try them. I always thought they were just another gimmick. _________________ Pearl White 1966 Sedan

I personally don't like WW on VW's, but look great on a Cadillac. But if you intend to install them they look so much better when they are period correct like this 67 vert. Using a wider 50's style not only didn't happen when the 67 was new....because they didn't make them anymore because the style changed, but changes the era of a car that does not belong there, it's like trying to adapt towel rack bumpers from a early bus to a bay window bus. |

Didn't the first year for the narrower WW tires start with the 1966 model Beetle? _________________ Pearl White 1966 Sedan

On domestic cars, the first downsizing came in 1959, then again in 1961, then again in 1963, by 63 they were only 1/2" WW, by 68-69 they were just a sliver about 1/8". By the time I bought my 76 Olds they were 1/2" on smaller Olds and a 3/4" on Cadillac. But as far as VW goes we need to go to the archives to see how VW's came.
A 1956 from R&T magazine;
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/lit/56road_track/3.jpg
A 1960 --they are getting narrower;
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/lit/60roadandtrack/2.jpg
A 1962, even narrower;
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/lit/62ads_fulline/2.jpg
A 1965, about the same as 62;
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/lit/65whatsbehind/1.jpg
A 1966 a little wider;
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/lit/66cut-outs/page4.jpg
A 1967 narrow again note the picture is a European 6 volt deluxe;
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/lit/67beetle/45.jpg
a 1971 Super Beetle;
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/lit/71superbeetle/cover.jpg
Looks to me that to be period correct a one size fits all doesn't work. |

Thanks for the info. I will check into them and ask about the dyna beads. Any certain tire store that you had those installed? _________________ 1964 Beetle Deluxe |

I had them installed at a local tirefactory store. The one local to me, http://www.tirefactory.com/millars
has really good customer service, and the crew that installed my tires was really careful with my painted wheels, and was happy to try the dyna beads in the tires. Great store. _________________ Plate of shrimp |
