I am building a VW Trike & this is my first time to use anything VW. So I am sure I will be asking a lot more ?'s My first one is if I go to a disk brake set up on the rear will I still need the backing plate. I am taking the trans axle to have it sandblasted & if I don't need the backing plate I will not have it blasted.
Thanks Bill

I cannot believe you haven't gotten an answer yet. You should not need the plate with any disc brake kit.

This section of samba is a ghost town.

The answer to your question. No you will not need the backing plates.
But save the caps and spacers.

When you buy the disc brake set-up decide whether you will keep or toss the parking brakes.

You can save a little by deleting the parking brake.

I have a trike and i have spent the last 7 years building and re-building it from the ground up. You will not need the backing plates but if you don't know which disc brakes to use please do your homework and do some research. There are some units that are crap. If ever you need something answered about trikes, do not hesitate to ask me.

Is there anyone here that has used a disk brake kit on a VW trike. If so are they that much better than the stock drum brakes, it looks like they cost almost the same if you get everything new.
