I saw or rather lusted over your car at the treffen. Gorgeous! I have 3 of the same seat belts like you have that are gray with wire clips by the belt buckles and chrome spring loaded airplane style buckles with approx 10mm enamel Vw logos. I'm hoping to find 1-2 more so I can have 2 belts in front and 2-3 in back seat. Do you know anymore about them? I believe they are split and oval era belts. I got mine from a guy in Germany. How about you cabriothusiast?

From when to when (month/ year ) did convertibles have crotch coolers? Does it differ from production dates of sedans?

guteandtite

I bought the seatbelts years ago out of Germany as well. They were the best 2 I could find and I had the belts re-dyed in grey as they were an dirty white color. They came out beautifully.

I believe they are late split early oval era.

Crotch coolers for convertibles and hardtops ran parallel date-wise. I come to this conclusion because all convertibles of the split era began their life as hardtops and had the required cutting done to make them convertibles.

That's great Todd! I remember Chuck showing this old vert back in his garage. You've done a great job in the restoration, congrats!

Thanks a million bud. It took longer than expected but it came out better than I could have hoped for.

Thanks to some very skilled and knowledgeable VW enthusiasts, It certainly was a joint effort.

Henry Marchena - interior, vision
George Schmidt - all mechanicals
Dave Sweinhaggen - metal
Chris Morgan - insane paint
Eric Jones - technical details and electrics

What production dates did the crotch coolers start and finish?

On the sedan the the crotch coolers started at #1-0221638
Does anybody know (the chassis number) when they started on the cabriolet?

I bet the exact dates are different from the sedans since VW supplied sedan bodies with no roof to Karmann. Karmann would then finish the conversion which probably took a fair amount of time so the introduction and discontinuation dates would lag by however long it took to complete the first and last cars with and without the crotch coolers.

The lag time will also depend on several factors.

How did VW supply the bodies to karmann?
If they sent them onesey, twosey then the lag time would be relatively short. If they were supplied in larger batches it would make the lag time longer to work through the batch. We have seen the LIFE magazine pictures that show karmann bound roofless shells on the assembly line and there was more than one so was the number based on orders or projections?

How many lines did Karmann have?
You also have to figure in the number of lines Karmann had running at any given time. I doubt it was just one but early on it probably wasn't a very big number. VW was not their only customer.

You also have to factor in the process flow within karmann. Did they just crank them out one after the other from start to finish or did they do a bunch of shells and store them for the next part of the process?

In 49 at the start of production only 3 colors where availeble.
Black plain, black with coral red and black with Ivory. Just like Hebmullers. Not sure when more colors came up. Maybe Claus can help.
