I have a little side play in one of my rocker arms so I'm going to take it off tomorrow and see what's up. Before I do it though I wanted to know if there's anything that can go wrong here....I never did it before.

It looks like just undoing the two bolts a little at a time to relieve spring pressure evenly and taking off the shaft. Is it really that simple or is there room for something to go wrong?

When I put it back on, do I just bolt it in turning each bolt a little at a time? Do I have to check valve lash again or just bolt and go?

Yes, to the correct torque value.

That depends upon whether you want the engine to run. Or whether you want to risk it self-destructing. ABSOLUTELY adjust ALL the valves again !!!

Check the wavy washers. They sometimes break and that can cause the side play you speak of. Remove the rocker arm shaft retaining nuts by loosening them a little at a time and alternate. I would definitely recheck valve clearance after reinstalling the nuts with a torque of 14 - 18 ft lb.

Turn your rocker shafts 180 degrees, the shafts wear on the bottom side.

Thanks for the replies. Sounds reasonably straight forward then and since I want the engine to run I will definitely adjust the valves once reinstalled.

I have replacement wavy washers. What causes them to break? Or do they just fail after a while?

And johnnypan, I'll rotate as you recommend. Could that wear be the cause of side play? I didn't notice any broken washers or springs laying in the valve cover or in my oil screen so maybe what you're talking about is the cause?
