A neat set of tire pictures Vanapplebomb for me. Our first set of off-road tires on the Manx were Gates Commando tires followed by a set of Formula Desert Dogs. Both work well off-road and the only problem with the Desert Dogs was that they tended to howl at highway speeds. _________________ "The simplest of outdoor adventures - the most treasured memories." - Bruce Meyers

I'm still curious if a set of those Sand Command/ MT baja pro 33's would fit stock arms/spring plates due to the heavy tread crowning. I wish I had a set to try out and see if they clear the long torsion bars on stock arms with Thing drums.
Honestly though, I wish MT would just make a 9" wide version of the baja pro 30" tire. That could be run with a stock transmission. Western Auto had it down with the 913, but rims and tires in those sizes are nearly extinct...and the Western Auto tires are not as true to the original Gates tires...the MT's are dog gone close though. I have my doubts that they use the old gates molds though. _________________ 1800 Type 4 Berrien 295

Guess what I saw a couple days ago?!?!?!
Another Gates Commando replica!!! The name on the tire was Montgomery Ward!!! Sadly, the owner of the buggy let the tires sit outside in the sun and deflated...side walls weather checked so bad that they split open _________________ 1800 Type 4 Berrien 295

Another find in the classifieds with genuine Gates Commando XT's up front. Also note the flipped wide 5 smoothies up front for a wider stance...something you can only do with the factory stock wide five rims.

Found an old picture of some Gates XT Sand Command tires, mounted on a Corvair powered Glitterbug. Picture was taken in December 1971.

Fantastic picture, has to be Pismo Beach. Looks like it has a Tri-phase air cleaner and a steering brake. |

Right on all accounts Nelson. It was also a very good day for getting clams.

Great pic Manx 102! Do you mind posting it up in the Vintage/ Contemporary nostalgic dune buggy pictures thread? That'd be a great addition |

I thought they only made a 9.00-15 tire...this one looks smaller. Did Gates make Sand Command tires in multiple sizes? Maybe it's just me, but it sure doesn't look like a 33 inch tire. _________________ 1800 Type 4 Berrien 295

I don't have any literature on what sizes Gates made the Sand Command tires. I do know that Mickey Thompson currently makes the Baja Pro in both a 30 and 33 inch diameter. I suspect Mickey Thompson is using molds that were originally used by Gates for the Sand Command.

Possible. MT used to also make a larger 10.00-15 as well. They some quit making it somewhat recently...as in the past five years or so.
The 33 and 35 inch baja pros look like they could have been made in old gates molds, but the 30 inch one looks like a custom mold made from a couple different tread molds cut down and spliced together. That being said, I have only seen Gates stuff for the 9.00-15 tires.
Weird, hu? _________________ 1800 Type 4 Berrien 295

No, the Burro wasn't exactly mandrel bent, Hilder used a wheel rim welded to the I-beam of his shop to bend his rollbars. They also say no specific dimension was the same on any two Burros. Still, they were a fantastic off-road vehicle. |
