So this is my current Bus HANK:
Engine:
Hank has been and is awesome, My wife and I and our 3 kids have been all over the Midwest in him. For the last couple of years we have wanted alittle more space and the ability to stop at a rest stop and all of us sleep (we once had to all cram on the bed and that was fine when the kids where tiny but now that they are 12,10 and 9 doesn’t work).
So I found a bus that is perfect!
Now before I go any further, I blame a man I have never met for my troubles…What he did to his bus made me want for the convenience, as my life gets busier HANK gets less and less attention…He gets what he need to run but never what I want to “upgrade” him, which is OK…but Paul’s “CLYDE”…now that’s a bus!!! so….
I conspired with my friends at VW Paradise in San Marco’s California and the new bus I am picking up will be driven from San Francisco (by me) strait to VWP where they are going to stab a 240HP turbo’ed motor from a Jetta (actually built up for a sand car that never happened) and in this thread I will log my trip and my new Buses transformation.
Hank will stay a part of the family for now (my kids actually started to cry at the thought of selling him. My boys spend about every summer night in him…) but we will add a new bus to the family…
So this is the preamble, When I land in San Fran I will take pics, Document our drive, Google says its 480 miles 8hrs and 2 minutes so I figure 10hrs plus Bus time!
I'll Document the transformation. When its done the plan is to fly the family back out get the bus and take a 2wk tour back to Nashville.
I'm excited can't wait!

A perfect drive and you still want to undo it? _________________ The best thing that anyone can do for their Bay is get the Volkswagen of America Official Service Manual published by Robert Bentley. Without it the bus is pretty much doomed.

Wow! I want to see pictures of this engine conversion when its done... Looks like the new bus is a Rivieria too! Got to say its still a bit cramped with 5 in there.. We camp a lot in our 73 Rivieria... 2 kids up top (6 and 8 ) if they don't poke each others eyes out.. Usually my daughter (6) winds up on the floor.. My wife and I in the bed with our 1 yr old.. Its doable but pretty cozy! If we go anywhere for more then a night a tent gets popped...Have fun in the new bus.. and hang on to the other one.. Won't be long before your kids will be driving! _________________ 73 Riviera Camper

Is it a 1.8T? I can't imagine trying to work with the troubles of a 2.0T. Be sure and post up all the details you can of the build, like cooling system, bell housing used or adapter and flywheel/clutch components.
Love the color of your bus! _________________ Click to view image

will be watching this! I have a thing for the 1.8T and have worked on a lot of them over the years. I have seriously thought about putting one in the bus if a clean radiator setup can be sourced that and doesn't kill the ground clearance.
Be sure they use an awfully large radiator with plenty of fans, at only 240hp 280tq (on a mustang dyno) my GTI could generate some serious heat on track days. At almost 370hp it can get to the point that if the course isnt a fast one then i need to take a cool off lap now once during a 30 minute session. I imagine that you wont probably be pushing your bus that hard but on a large grade the K04 (guessing thats the turbo they added to get to 240hp) can really start to breath fire and heat up the engine.
Can I also add to my list of questions... What engine code (stamped on cylinder head) are they using for the swap? The earlier AEB heads from the passats and A4s had larger intake ports for better low end torque. Also, what engine management they plan to use? Lugtronic, O34EFI and Unitronic's Maestro have great base maps and work with all the factory engine sensors.
Good luck man, cant wait to see the results! _________________ Click to view image

He's going to have a lot less trouble with the current 2.0 then he'll ever have with the 1.8T. Just saying. I'd keep it stock and roll it as is _________________ '75 Hard Top Westfalia 2.0L F.I.

It's debatable. I've got almost 100k on a motor that makes over 400 hp at the crank and have never had the head off or worried about an oil drip. When the time comes to make more power than the stock bottom end can handle most guys just need a set of IE rods, OEM rings, OEM bearings, and a block hone. This can be done in a weekend and you have a 500+HP capable motor, still with no oil leaks and an AC bolts right to the block. If VW Paradise gets the cooling right and the management off the self this could be a clean swap. The early AEB motors were drive by cable so that could make the interface even easier. The factory wiring harness goes straight from the engine to ECU in the MkIVs. The physical quality of the wiring and connectors on the MkIV are excelent and weather shielded connectors are nice. With the factory ECU you would also get to retain the four engine knock sensors and the timing retard for when you ask too much from the motor. The Motronic 7.5 in the Jetta he is talking about is a really great setup that also uses wide band O2s so it does a good job of compensating for altitude and larger injectors. For the money you could put together a factory 180hp setup for pretty cheap. At the local pick-a-part i could go get an engine wiring harness and ECU for $500. Again if there was a radiator solution that works then this can be a super reliable setup. Think about how nice it would be to hook up the factory diagnostic software VAG-COM to a OBD-II port and watch and log all your engine parameters and get fault codes.
The 1.8T pushes big A4s with taller gears that weight probably about the same as a loaded Westy.
I was promising myself a Raby CS kit for the bus but the cost keeps climbing and now its down to a single run of a limited number of kits per year. I just see the writing on the wall. My bus came without a motor so unfortunately I never developed an allegiance to the TypeIV. Us young watercooled savages love motor swaps anyways _________________ Click to view image
