I'm looking at a 1990 Golf, 133,000 kilometers with an automatic trans. Never owned a Golf, what should I look for? How often are the timing belts supposed to be done? Also, how are these trannies? I wouldn't hesitate on the trans if it were a Vanagon. Are these units as good?
Body and interior are in good shape, just passed air care. The owners claim 35MPG.

Thanks

Betls should be done every 80k or so, and the automatic part of the trans is the same as the vanagon. The final drive part, and gearing is different. As long as the car was looked after, it should last a long time. Stuff doesn't (seriously) rust in Colorado.
