Hey Wrenchman12,
I can sense what you are doing here, and if the VW ethers waft down kindly upon Good Vibrations, you might have a legendary VW bus on the cheep, the best kind for hit-the-road fun.
My engine "overhaul" in Dallas in November cost $110.00 with used heads from a junk trailer three states prior. It is running FINE.

I forgot to take a picture of the new engine seal but got that installed today too..Fingers crossed she joins the ranks of running bus soon! _________________ 73 Riviera Camper

Thanks Westyman! Might take you up on that!
Well I only had an hour or so today to play with the bus, but I managed to get the fuel line hooked up and most of the wiring reconnected, including newer battery terminals...
The good news.. She is cranking over! So the key switch, and starter are good! the bad... no fuel or spark!??
Im not really suprised at the lack of fuel because I am relying on the original fuel pump. I did take the fuel pump completely apart and clean it but I put it back together with the old diaphragm.. Does the pump need to be primed? Guess I need to decide wether to buy a new rebuild kit with a new diaphragm or switch over to a 12v pump? Any thoughts?
As far as the spark issue I figure its got to be something simple?? I have new points, adjusted correctly, a new condensor, and new coil.. I did my best to tag all wires when I removed the engine and I replaced any worn or questionable looking wires and cleaned all contacts. I rehooked them as they were hooked up by the previous owner and refrenced my Bentley wiring diagram..One point of intrest is that the coil was no where to be found when i bought this bus last fall? Anyways.. I'm wondering if it is possible to hook up a remote starter switch that I can operate from behind the bus so that I don't drive my wife and kids nuts getting them to come out and turn the key for me? I did a quick search but didn't find what I am looking for..
I'll post up a few pictures in a second showing the wiring... There are two wires that don't have a home yet and i can't figure what they go to even after refrencing the Bently diagram..
Any help is greatly apreciated..
One more point of intrest.. The distributor was rocking a bit as the engine cranked? I don't remember my distributor in my 73 1700 doing this.. Is this normal? _________________ 73 Riviera Camper

Ok so here are a few pictures of the wires in question..
The first wire comes into the left side of the engine compartment near the wire leading to the brake light.. Anyone know what this might be for? Someone decided it should have an inline fuse at some point
The second wire in question comes out of a protective sleave along with the wire that goes to the tempature sensor wire. The two wires come from the right side of the engine compartment. The two black wires in the picture not the green one..Any ideas on this one?
Here is the wiring to the generator, that I belive to be correct..
This picture shows the wire from the negative side of the coil over to the two leads on the carb..
Here is a picture of the distributor... I connected the plug wires as shown and the light green wire coming from points/condensor to the posetive side of the coil..
Aything missing or connected incorrectly??? Any pointers apreciated _________________ 73 Riviera Camper

Is that the reverse lights? Its the only thing I can think of that uses an inline fuse.
Also, I've replaced a few 1600 fuel pumps and never needed to prime. A while back I did an alternator conversion on the 71 which required a different pump. The original was still in decent shape when I pulled it. I think I may still have it. If I can find it, you're welcome to it. _________________ WEST COASTERS! PERSON MISSING SINCE 4/4! Maybe on the back up lights? I know in my 73 there is a wire in the same spot for the gas heater.. I don't think this bus ever had a heater but maybe the wire was there for one? Doubt it though.. i think my pump is fine just needs a diaphram? I'll keep your pump in mind if it comes to it. Thanks.. my 73 has an electric pump which works great so might consider going that way.. Happy to just get it to turn over today.. I'll have it running soon enough.. I hope! _________________ 73 Riviera Camper

Hi, the green wire from the points goes to the neg- side of the coil and the other green wires from the carb go to the pos+ side of the coil.
Thanks to Jerry for the picture.

Hook some wires to the two positions on the starter that reach back to the rear of the vehicle. Use a push botton or a toggle switch or just touch them together. Make sure the vehicle is in nuetral and the ebrake is set. Turn the key to the run position and use the switch to crank the engine. The wire that goes to the pos+ side of the coil should have power when you turn the key to the run position. If not find the one that is keyed. Normally it is black. You may need to turn the Dist. while you are cranking to get it started. Thanks for saving the Bay. Good Luck |

Thanks Tcash! I have the wires on the coil screwed up for starters, and remote starter will really help on this bus and on future buses to be saved! _________________ 73 Riviera Camper

I had to shorten the orange 73 decklid rail 1/4" so it will fit the 69...took an 1/8th off either end.
Looking forward to welding this in and having a working decklid soon!

| Very cool bus, and desire. I did the same thing last fall to a 69 tin top westy, that had been sitting since 96' hands down my favorite ride! Used it as a daily driver all winter (thankyousungod) and ready to take full advantage of the upcoming spring and warm weather camping. Now, about that oil leak... |

Thanks folks!
Have good reason to believe this bus hasn't seen the road since 93.. It will be great to get her back out there.. i am very lucky to have accumulated so many parts and have this bus to work on.. Has been a mild winter and has been fun.. I wonder who this bus belonged to back in 93?
