Open forum, so opinion from my side.

You can't manage an engine build in crisis mode. Well, you could, but it's not the right approach IMO. If something doesn't fit, step back, sleep on it, evaluate options, make a desision, move on. Noone will die.

IMO, any of the parts you have or had would have worked together fine if put together well, people do it all the time.

Stan

Thanks, Stan. You're absolutely right and I've been in crisis mode from the start. And now all this confusion with cam lifter compatibility. Holy crap! I'm getting there. Ruled out the Engle cam a few minutes ago by ordering 1.4 rockers. Waiting for Piersixe parts to open now so I can speak to them about my xr310 cam and what the best head configuration would be to use. Valve size....compression. what lifters they have that match the xr cam. I think that will make my decision. Just.gotta jump in and swim.

Funny, Mark. I've got 3 cams already.
Just got off the phone with the SLR cam guy. Going with the SLR xr310 and a set of his lifters. Also got a recommendation on heads and CR...same ones Modok recommended, the 44x37.5 super pro's. Now to get on the phone and order them with the cc's I need....59cc chqmbers. Goi g to run a conservative 9.5:1. SLR said the 310 would run great with that CR.

You've got to get a plan together and stick with it. Talk to ONE professional and follow their advice all the way through. Or do you want to be the first guy on here to build a $50,000 2275cc engine that has been through 14 camshafts before it was even mocked up? With this much displacement, you won't have to worry about the engine being "tame" or "screaming", pretty much any of the parts you've listed so far will make it do BOTH of those things, depending on how far your foot is from the floorboard.

Larger displacement helps mask issues that smaller displacement won't, so it's far more forgiving when radical parts are used together (correctly). Put it together and drive it. You can always tear it apart later to swap parts out.

Hell, at this point you probably have a warehouse of parts in your garage anyways! Maybe you should look into becoming a wholesaler for the Samba community! By selling the parts for half of what you paid for them, you could make a 50% PROFIT!!!! Shocked Laughing

Ha ha.
Ordered the slr scat lifters....not lube a lobes
Ordered new cut to length chromoly pushrods
Ordered cb's true 1.4 rockers.
Ordering the heads at 60cc's tonight or tomorrow.
Guy at pierside recommended the cb super pro heads also
And CR is going to be tame at 9.5
Can't change now, running low on funds. Have to pay for the transaxle by middle of the month or so

Flat out rips!!!!! zings to 8K and the power is very linear. Even with 3.88 RP and 28" tire, it is very drivable.

I like it because it doesnt have a marked rpm where it "comes on" it just pulls and pulls. If you have good heads, this is a great cam!!

don't be afraid of the compression with THAT cam...its like [email protected] needs it!!

Yeah, That's why I'm ordering them around 60cc chambers. May go 59. I'll have some leeway to run the deck at .045 or get tighter with .035 and up the compression. Either way I think it will run well. 9.5 to 10 is good. Jfats is a tuner.....has a lot of experience....I don't. I've got a good crank and good rods....4340 forged chromoly.....so the tifht deck doesn't scare me. Turns out I can't measure for shit. Ised the deck tool amd snugged the cylinder and came up with .024 to .025 on all four. Jesus christ I can't measure. Had a guy up the street double check it for me just to be sure....figured I might be doing sonething wrong. Nope. .024 to .025.
Ive got .060 copper amd .070 copper on the way. Deck will be either .035 or .045. Make a decision when I start putting it together. Either way, the SLR cam is going in. Thanks for the post Murzi. Actually a positive one. ...as yours always are. Appreciate it. Still waiting on the body shop.
A nice fella on here sent me the shortened bearing caps and bearings....free!.....for my short axle conversion so I've still got work to do.

Just messed with the cb engine calculator. Looks like 58cc chambers is the ticket and not 60cc. What do you think?

Weren't you gonna build a second bigger engine once you finished the car? Just keep all your extras until that one is speced out. Hurry up and get this one running, I want to see how its gonna run, I'm also doing a 2165 that is similar

I'm hurrying. And this one is 2276. 82 crank.

This one is going to run like a scalded dog. My buddy Murzi just built one with the same cam that ran 12.6 @ 106. Beast mode. I'm going with the CB super pro heqds. 44x37.5. Guy at SLR said that was a good choice for the xr310 cam.

I do want to hear when this "Build" comes out and is tuned.

How do you expect it to run? RB

Like a beast. It's just about there. Tin powder coated. Waiting on the SLR lifters and its going back together. Then its just a wait on the heads. CB super lros 44x37.5 And the transaxle from Rancho. 3.88 ring and pinion with stock late model super beetle 1st through 4th. Just got off the phone with the guy building my truss bas. 1 inch chromoly. Staye 1 kennedy with solid disc. Black jrethane trans mounts with a solid mid mount trans brace. Jetting ahould be spot on. Got it from Murzi and he knows jetting. Messes with this size motor and cam all the time. Waiting game. Bkdy went back to the paint shop for fixes....they did a half ass buff and polish. Fixing it now and spraying the engine compartment with a bedliner material. Motor is probably going to scare me. Started out to build a 150 hp motor....now it loks like it will be 180 plus.

Bug a lugz, when you get your CB 1.4's have a good look at the contact face of the hardened lash caps, I just went through two sets of caps to get 8 usable units, the face on the faulty ones were chewed up I'm assuming by the induction hardening process and even after polishing them I'll still not use them
Also deburr the rocker pads and pull apart the adj screws and blow out the oil passages as mine were full of machining residue/swarf etc, the thrust sides of the rockers were also polished to prevent chewing up shims

Will do. Thanks, 66. I'vealready got some lash caps, and I'll go through the rockers. Thanks for the heads up.
