I just got a good used AS21 case from a 78 SB. It was recently cut to .060 on the mains, and +2 thrust.
I have most of the parts needed to build a 1904 with a slightly used 74mm crank (standard), and slightly used 90.5 P&C's. I also have a set of new Heads (40x35), a #2280 cam I can grab and a set of ICT's. I would only need some 5.325 rods, and gaskets and such.
The plan is to use this engine as a weekend and event driver (some highway), and to cruise on nice weather days.
Would this case be a good choice for this engine? or should I wait until I can find a better case, or get a new case? |

If the line bore was done correctly, and if the bearings fit well, maybe. But I find that after a case has been run enough to be on it's 3rd line bore, the lifter bores are often shot to hell. If the lifters are still tight, run it, but it will be that cases last hurrah. If the lifter bores are loose it isn't worth the investment to fix, IMO
Personally, I would look for a better case. _________________ modok wrote:

The only thing I would use that case for is a 1600 beater engine for a sand rail or off road play car. I would not use a case that has been cut that much for anything I needed to rely on. I absolutely would not build any stroker engine on a case that has the thrust cut twice.
just my opinion. _________________ 2017 Street Comp Champion - Thunder Valley Raceway Park - Noble, OK

The actual size of the line bore means nothing if done correctly IMO
It could be on it's first rebuild or it's fourth rebuild, we can't really know, but that would be a huge difference in how much life it's got left.
Inspecting other parts of the case could tell more.
Lifter bores, seal bores, ect.
But if that's all you give us to go on, then, we're gonna assume it's ready for retirement rather than athletics. |

What you have in mind to use this car for sounds like a pretty easy life compared to an off road toy.
I'm with others in that there needs to be more investigation with measuring tools before deciding. If it measures up - go for it! |

The lifter bores are all nice and tight. I do not have any history on the number of rebuilds, or the history of the case prior to me having it. The machine shop that did the line bore said it all checks and has a really good fit and is ready to be used. Of coarse, I did not specify that I planned on building a 1.9 and not a 1.6.
I really would hate to have the case be the cause of damage to any of the parts I have accumulated, so I will heed your warning. I guess the search for good case continues. I have a friends that is looking to build a stock motor, so I will donate the case to his cause.
Thank you everyone for your help. |

To me, as a fun car (events, nice weekend drives) I would use the case if it measures out. How many miles a year? Maybe 1-2000 based on your description
You’re not building a high rpm engine that you’ll beat the crap out of. |

I ran a 060 over case for 80k miles as a daily driver in a dual carb 1776 engine.
If you are planning only on using it on weekends then assemble it and run it.
If you think it is too risky then sell the case and buy a new one.
The machine shop said it was good to go. Make sure it is full flowed and all the galley plugs are pulled so you can clean everything out properly. |

Probably no provision for a mechanical fuel pump. |
Once upon a time before Rimco was bought and sold a few times someone there was talented enough to modify AJ cases to use a mechanical pump. All it required was welding some material on the outside to accommodate the stud. Now it’s a lost art 😂 |
