This trike build is for a friend of mine Chris.

Chris was wanting a trike to replace his Harley to give his Lady a safer feel when riding with him.

Chris is very a capable car Guy and restored a very nice 65 mustang recently. He just needed some insight with VWs and after seeing what was out there for sale in the trike world he knew what he didn't want.
We struck a deal so that Chris will help me with my 59 kombi so I can move along quicker with its completion.

On our search for a trike Chris and I both looked over web classifieds for trikes and found a lot of overpriced jalopies.
Now don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with owning a jalopy but when they are for-sale they need to be priced accordingly.

We were getting discouraged after weeks of looking till Chris calls me one mourning when he heard of a local Guy trying to sell a 1947 Harley Davidson VW trike with a springer front-end on a mourning radio swap shop.

When we arrived we found this.

We were inline waiting our turn. Those in front of us were wanting to drive it home not a project. What do they expect for $1100.

As each person looked we waited inline patiently. I thought to myself if Chris does not buy this I will.
When it was Chris's turn he struck a deal for what I believe the fork was worth and we pulled it to my place to cut up.

Chris knew he wanted a fiberglass rear section without the forward seat.
So I placed a want ad for a trike body and received many calls wanting to buy a trike body I did not have.
One of the fellows called looking for a trike body knew of a rear only body in Ocala for sale.
It ended up being a new never installed or painted body that was made in the early 90's.

This is what we found and struck a deal for half of what its new value was.

First order of business is to extend frame rails. Instead of butt welding we heated and stretched pipe over original frame rails for strength.

After raking out forks the down-tubes from neck needed to be heated and bent to level bottom rails.

Chris has been doing most of the work relying on me for welding and any questions he had regarding VWs.

Chris installed new trans mounts, brakes, wheel cylinders, hard and soft lines, axle boots, HD clutch throw-out arm, shocks, and what ever we thought should be replaced.

I highly suggested Chris change over to disc later. Trikes tend to have directional pulling when braking if shoes are not adjusted properly.

This is the tank and seat Chris brought over to be mocked up.
Spacing between seat and tank will be filled in with sheet steel.

We copied the brake and clutch master locations from trike builder who had a few trikes on display at Bug-Jam.
I am not going into the trike building business so no worries here.

The Empi shifter from Bug-Jam work great.
Chris cut out these pedal arms for the brake and clutch.
He will shape the flat aluminum bracket for a better look later.

Clutch and brake pedals are complete.

Chris did a great job on creating these from primitive drawings I gave him.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Aluminum rods connecting pedals to master-cylinders are light-weight hollow tubing. End connectors are machined down for a tight fit held with epoxy glue.

Next is battery base and hold-down, fuse-box placement.
Wiring harness will be completely soldered and wrapped in cloth-tape.

Once engine is installed fired-up and all lights work Chris will take this beast to his shop for side panels, floor-boards, paint and upholstery.

Stock 1600 engine that came with the trike. It was missing all the important cooling tins and thermostat flapper thingys.

Top end pulled and found crack between valves in #3 combustion chamber. Honed cylinders checked original ring gaps, seat heads, new push-rod tubes and othe gaskets and reassembled.

I Had chrome laying around from a bus i bought.
Installed thermostat flppers in crome doghouse shroud.
Installed hoover-bit and switched from the small oil-cooler to a doghouse cooler.

Cranked over till oil light went out. Hooked up power and started on first crank.

I have driven different frame geometries and this by far the best cruzin trike so far. The heavy springer and stretch make it track perfectly and does not loose traction at the front wheel while turning and giving it throttle at the same time.

Chris is very pleased and loves cruzin around as much as possible..
