I want to change my switches to toggle switches on my 68 beetle. Does anyone know how to do this? Lots of wires going to the same switches, need directions and pictures, please? thanks |

changing the switches could be problematic cause where are you going to but them? in the old switch holes? they definately wont fit. i would just pull them out and swich wired from one wither to the other _________________ 1974 SuperBeetle Build

I want to change the switches to the lights, wipers, emergency flasher lights, and add a momentary switch for the window washer and a toggle switch for the dome lights. I plan to put them in the dash after removing the pad (it's all cracked anyway). You can use a large washers with the holes the size of the switch mount. And maybe some lights to show what switch is on.
I want to clean up the dash area and paint it to match the inside. Normally you could just tie the wires together with wire nuts, then attach them to the the tabs on the switch. But the wipers have a delay to stow the wipers back where they belong. I plan to put a aircraft (red) cover over the emergency flasher switch to give it that aircraft look.
What do you think?? |

Guessing it's just for visual purposes?
Why not just get some nice shiny billet knobs
The hazard and wiper switches are fairly complex, wiper switch has to send power for the park mechanism as well as two speeds and the hazard switch has to power up the relay when ignition is off but also change it over to turnsignal power once its on.
Even the headlight switch has several functions, rheostat, parker circuit etc.
It could be done but you are creating a huge job for yourself. _________________ Quick little bug, you got a Porsche motor in that?

I hate to say this but you may be creating a mess for the next owner to fix. That is unless you have the determination to finish the job and make it look nice and neat. _________________ 1969 Beetle

I think the stock or those billet knobs are very ugly. It is much more fun and looks better to flip a toggle switch. I'm building a custom car, not your looks like you bought it off the show room floor or grandma's kind of car. Race cars and most really good custom cars use them. So don't dog me about my ideas of what looks good, ok? |

I wasn't dogging anyone's taste. I've seen some very nice custom jobs on here and at car shows. As long as you know the job is going to take twice and long and twice as much effort as orginally planned....I say go for it. _________________ 1969 Beetle

It's gonna' require a few specialty switches and relays, just about each one of these ideas has been taken on by someone in the past. Do some searches across the internet and you should be on your way to learning. |

didnt the later models (maybe 74+ super) have toggle switches? you might be able to rewire your car so that you could use those toggles. this would also give you a good head start on how it should be wired because you would be able to check out the wiring diagrams to help work out some of the probs involved with the changes. _________________ 68 bug 1600sp 30/31

Nah, rocker switches, and the dashpanel has special moulded in sections to clip them in place

Just throw in a rocker on some drilled sheet metal - If you going to custom the dash - weld the sheet metal panel in
Then wire in a relay like below - the toggle or rocker on off switch would go between the 30 and to power
As I showed before take a piece of rectangular tubing and then just rest the entire panel across the bottom of the dash - If you’re looking for a simple
