I know this has been mentioned in other rebuild threads but I can't find them. What's the silver insulation/soundproofing material? _________________ __________________________________

It's called Road Kill. Here is a link where it can be purchased. It makes a HUGE difference in road noise.. Hence the name http://stingerelectronics.com/products.aspx?selectedcategoryid=12
This is not a very good image but you can see that they make the material in black also. Here we used black in areas that are seen like under the back seat and deck lid area.

Thanks, that stuff is quite the investment. Someone messaged me to try 'peel & seal' which I might imagine is a similar product, but more in my price range at <20usd for the same amount. Probably not as good, but good enough for me. _________________ __________________________________

This isn't what the OP used, but thought you might like to know that original-type stuff is available out there.
I would never have the time, knowledge or $$$ to do this to my own van, but I think I'll subscribe to this thread just for the "Wow!" factor. Very nice work. _________________ "See The Glass As Already Broken."

How have I missed this thread. After my last bit of rust repair, and hopefully before Syncro Solstice 2012, I will do the same thing prior to putting my camper cabinets back inside.
Love the dash treatment. I will be going that way as well as I have a crackle dash.
The seat heaters, WOW. Maybe in a couple more years. I have bumpers and tire carriers/shelfs (2) to buy this year. _________________ Happiness=Portland, Oregon in the rearview mirror! |

This looks SO clean. I've wanted to do something like this for a while and this is done really nice and provides some great inspiration. Is there any more information you can provide about the dash? Did you do it yourself? I can't tell if it's a whole new dash thats been made with that material, or if it's an old dash that's been covered with the "grabber" material.
That looks like a nice head unit from Pioneer too. I know when I originally looked into doing something similar, it was difficult to find head unit that could input/output true component or HDMI video. How do you plan on connecting the mini mac video? _________________ No more van. Wildcat has a new home.

That dash material looks exactly like some motorcycle seat cover material that was one a bike I bought. It was OEM, but in poor condition after staying outside for a decade in Texas. |

The dash is a slight rubberized material.
It's called "grabber" and is mostly used for personal water craft. ...
Perfect for temporary placement of things like a cell phone etc.
Nice Dash !!!
Any chance you could share a link on the "grabber" material?
Thanks,

Stephan,
I thought you were working on making some Double Din Dashes. Did this ever come to be??
Edit: And if you aren't working on the dash, would you be willing to outline your process? Looks really good! _________________ Certified VW Newbie

Peel and Seal works really good for the price. $30 is enough to do both front doors and the the slider with a little left over. I believe it is the same stuff GW sells sans branding on the foil.
The material on the dash looks way cool. If VW were to make a Vanagon today I would imagine the interior would be close to this one! I'm drooling! |

We stopped using the Grabber material because is started to lift in areas. We switched to a material called Allante Vinyl. Seems to hold better and looks just as nice.
We have another one coming up in a couple weeks or so I can share the process once we start on it. It's not easy and there is a lot of cutting and modifying involved. Not for the squeamish. _________________ '90 Syncro Westy 1.8T with 180hp 174 torque, CA safe!
