Well, I pulled the engine out of the 67 to give it a general clean up and convert to doghouse and install my kads. But the question that I have is should i replace the tarboard (which was in really bad shape) or remove it completly and cover the firewall with rhino liner (or similar stuff). any pros or cons in doing this. does anyone sell decent replacement tarboard?

I tried a replacement board once, it was pure crap. I think the rhino liner would look terrible, but I like a clean look. I just painted mine the color of the car. Looks much better IMO.

Lizard Skin. You get the sound barrier and the clean look of paint. Win win.

There is a product called "Rocker shultz" (might be spelled right) This is somewhat high build and cusion type with a bumpy texture. The great part is that this is paintable and great sound deadning. Just make sure you mask off what you dont want sprayed with this stuff. Has its own applicator that fits in can.

Hey Jason!

I think my 63 has kind of bed liner sprayed in the trunk and engine bay. I hate it because everytime you go to work on something and slip, brush against it you get a nice "road rash" on your hand. It's skid resistant and has the same affect as gluing 80 grit sand paper all over the place.

I would vote for something that is sound proof, but not skid prof.

LOL yeah neither of us got it right. Embarassed

It's undercoating, I've used it before. It's not sandpapery like bedliner stuff.

Also, I should point out, you can get good quality, heavy, replacement tarboard insulation:

lol i can totally picture you getting road rash on your hands. do you know what jim used in his ghia? thats more along the lines of what i was thinking anyway. still undecided though. the OE stuff looks good, but damn i just dropped almost $500 in parts today and still need to spend around $2-300 more.

How about a product like dynamat with the tarboads over top? Something like that would quiet it down and still have that O.E.M. look. This is what I was thinking for my ride after I get through with body work. Any textured liner in the engine compartment seems a little crude. Do you know how hard that crap is to clean?

Okay- not sure if this is really old, bad advice, but here goes. Many years ago HVWs had an article that suggested gluing a couple layers of roofing paper together. I decided recently to use this process to duplicate the heavy tarboard panels that line the backs of my bus seats prior to upholstery. Three layers, laminated with spray adhesive worked absolutely great! I'll definately try the engine bay of a bug next. I found the partial roll of tarpaper and spray glue at Habitat for Humanity's ReStore business- total cost, less than $11.

Even better yet, install the original style tarboards in the original location and use the dynamat on the inside. That's what I did on my '69 and it's very quiet inside.

my bad, it looks like you would put your new oil in through here.
did some searching around the forums, saw your post mentioning it being the Berg model. I guess that means it works in addition to just looking cool as hell.

Thats what I just did. I put down 3 layers of quick roof (similar to dynomat, but a lot less expensive) and then overtop that I put tarboard. It looks nice and clean! Cool

Hey Glenn, I'm interested in your breather box setup, do you have any pictures of the lines going to the valve covers? I was interested to see how you ran the lines around the engine seal, or if you had to make holes in the metal to make room for those big hoses? thanks
